Job overview

Our Business & Digital (B&D) engineering team devise innovative solutions across the business on a variety of programmes for the future – for our customers, our colleagues and for London. Team members, amongst many other activities:

  • Problem-solve by understanding TfL’s complex business needs,
  • Support the management of TfL’s assets throughout their lifecycle by the efficient use of engineering information,
  • Exploit the use of digital engineering, helping programmes to use data effectively to make decisions and collaborate with our supply chain,
  • Identify opportunities to do things differently and work with partners inside and outside TfL to turn those opportunities into reality.

In this role, you will primarily be supporting the Business Engineering team to provide optimised engineering solutions for TfL’s uniquely complex issues. Business Engineers have a varied skillset but combine engineering knowledge and business acumen to solve problems for clients, notably in strategy, operations and maintenance.

There are many projects across Business Engineering, such as identifying and implementing efficiencies in ongoing maintenance programmes, investigation of new, innovative, methodologies and technologies or technical engineering on initiatives to support TfL’s NetZero aims.

Additionally, you will closely interface with our Digital Engineering team, which includes Digital Engineering, Building Information Modelling (BIM) and Asset Condition Management specialists. Collectively, we support TfL to meet our financial, operational and sustainability goals - helping to ensure that TfL is a strong, green heartbeat for London. Much of this could not happen without the involvement and groundwork undertaken by Business and Digital Engineers.

What will I be doing?

Your 18-month development programme will be made up of 3 to 5 exciting placements, each 3-6 months long. These will include placements within the overarching Business & Digital team, and then 2 to 4 placements in other TfL Engineering teams. Our aim is to equip you with the range of skills and experience you need for a successful career. We also understand that everyone’s career is different, so every apprentice’s journey is unique.

Within the Business & Digital team, you will be gaining valuable insight in core Business Analyst skills used within Engineering, including:

  • How to elicit, document and manage business requirements,
  • Applying appropriate techniques to identify problems and opportunities within a TfL business situation,
  • Assessing and documenting the drivers, costs, benefits and impacts of a proposed business change,
  • Modelling, simulating, development and research of new business engineering processes.

These skills will enable you to identify real world enhancements for the success of TfL and our customers – all the while you will develop valuable experience in engaging and managing stakeholders.

Your remaining placements can be aligned to your interests to support you in your future career. Outside Business & Digital, your placements could be with the programmes and projects working to upgrade and replace our assets or update how we maintain and operate existing assets and systems. You could also work with our discipline engineers, gaining an insight into the unique challenges associated with assets such as Rolling Stock, Signals or Bridges and Structures. Your Scheme Sponsor will ensure your placements are relevant and support your development.

Where can this career take me?

Upon successful completion of this scheme, you could choose to further your career in engineering by taking up a position within the Business & Digital team. However, your newly acquired knowledge and skills will enable you to operate in multiple departments within or outside of Engineering, depending on your career aspirations. TfL is a large and diverse organisation, and the breadth of the Business Analyst role means there will be many opportunities to progress, both in the Business & Digital team and wider TfL structure.

What training and support will you get?

We will support your professional development through a combination of classroom-led training courses, online training courses, and structured networking. You will receive other related soft skills and technical skills training and one-to-one support throughout the programme from your Scheme Sponsor, Placement Managers, Learning Coach, and Mentor. You will also be provided a Buddy, who will be a more experienced apprentice from the scheme.

What do we look for?
