What Qualifications will I gain?

Level 3 Engineering Maintenance Technician

Job overview

Our Pump Engineers play a vital role in maintaining and upgrading critical pumping and drainage assets across the network. These systems protect stations, tunnels, lift pits, escalator machine rooms and other key infrastructure from flooding, helping to ensure the safe operation of the railway for passengers and staff.

Sustainability

Sustainability is intrinsic to TfL’s work ethos, and we ensure that we operate in a sustainable way to protect and regenerate the natural world.

What will I be doing?

As a Pumps & Drainage Apprentice, you will support the team in keeping these assets reliable, compliant and operational. Your work will involve assisting with planned maintenance, inspections, basic fault finding, repairs and asset checks, while learning how pumping systems operate and how they are monitored and controlled. You will develop an understanding of both mechanical and electrical equipment, including pump installations, control panels, alarms, sensors and telemetry/SCADA systems.

You will be exposed to both legacy and modern technologies, building the skills needed to help improve reliability, reduce unplanned failures and support continuous improvement across the network. This role is ideal for someone who enjoys hands-on engineering, problem solving, teamwork and working safely in operational environments.

Where can this career take me?

Over the course of your apprenticeship, you will gain the foundation required to progress into a competent Pump Engineer role and support the long-term resilience of the network. This standard aligns with the following professional recognition:

  • Institution of Mechanical Engineers (IMechE) for Engineering Technician (EngTech)
  • The Institution of Engineering and Technology (IET) for Engineering Technician (EngTech)

What training and support will you get?

This apprenticeship is packed with exciting opportunities to develop your skills and gain industry-recognized qualifications while working on one of the most iconic transport networks in the world. You’ll have an Apprenticeship Development Manager who will act as your line manager and be responsible for ensuring that the design and delivery of the apprenticeship is fit for purpose. They will help secure the right placements for you and support you in your professional development. You’ll also have a mentor that’ll support and guide you sharing their knowledge and expertise.

We also have an established Graduate and Apprentice Committee as well as an Alumni group, these groups are powerful networks in developing your understanding of the organisation, different apprenticeship schemes and opportunities to develop your career. Many current graduates and apprentices believe this to be a powerful support network and they often hold apprentice only events that are very beneficial to your continued learning.
