Job Overview

Our Professional Services teams focus on the employees at the heart of our business. Want to help keep London moving? Join the Chief People Officer team at TfL and play a key role in supporting the people who make it happen. Our vision is to be the green heartbeat of London, and we need great people to achieve that. In this role, you’ll help make sure the right people, with the right skills, are in the right jobs. Without this, we can’t deliver the world-class service London depends on.

You’ll learn how to support the business by providing essential People services and helping us deliver our Colleague Strategy. This is your chance to start a career in the People profession and make a real impact.

What will I be doing?

You’ll start a 30-month (2 years, 6 month) apprenticeship programme designed to kick-start your career in the People profession. It’s a mix of hands-on experience in the workplace and academic study, giving you the skills and knowledge you need to succeed.

Your journey will include up to six different placements, so you’ll get a taste of everything. Here’s what that could look like:

  • Employee Services (BSF) – Your first placement will teach you how TfL works and how we support our colleagues every day.
  • Specialist People Teams – You can rotate through areas like Change, Talent, Recruitment, Diversity & Inclusion, Learning & Development, and more.
  • People Business Partnering – In your final placements, you may work on big projects like organisational change and talent planning.

Where can this career take me?

By the end of the programme, you’ll have a CIPD Level 5 Associate Diploma in People Management and become a CIPD Associate Member. This opens doors to careers in:

  • Change
  • Recruitment
  • Learning & Development
  • Diversity & Inclusion
  • Employee Relations
  • People Business Partnering

What training and support will you get?

Our award-winning teams will support your ongoing development, through a wide range of on-the-job practical experience and placements. We'll support your professional development through a combination of training, mentoring, and networking. We’ll support you every step of the way with:

  • On-the-job experience across different teams
  • Classroom and online training
  • Support for study
  • Mentoring and networking opportunities
  • A dedicated scheme sponsor, placement manager, and a buddy to guide you

You’ll also have one day a week for study and access to a strong apprentice network.

What do we look for?

Everything we do as an organisation is to ensure that our evolving city remains future proofed for millions of Londoners. Our talented apprentices form a vital part of that vision, so it’s important that we find the best people to help us do this.

  • Communicate well and build strong relationships
  • Are open to new ideas and teamwork
  • Care about colleagues and customers
  • Adapt and innovate to meet challenges

Our core values are extremely important to us, and we desire candidates who are:

  • Caring about our colleagues, our customers and our work
  • Open to each other, to new ideas and to working together
  • Adaptable to diverse needs and willing to innovate

Still want to understand more? Here is another quote from one of our 2025 alumni:

“I have recently completed my People Professional apprenticeship at TfL and it has been a wonderful experience from start to finish! As a career changing, the idea of starting something completely new was daunting however the scheme and the support in place was incredible in making those doubts fade away very quickly! From completing placements within various People departments to the knowledge I have gained from my academic studies, the scheme has provided me with a range of key skills which I can carry forward into the next steps of my career.” - Manpreet, Assistant People & Change Business Partner.
