Location

London/ Hybrid1 day per week attending university. Up to 2 days per week working within an office/site and two days per week working from home.

Entry requirements:

You should already hold or be working towards a minimum of 2 GCSE’s Grade 4 (C) including Maths and English Language (or equivalent) plus 3 A Levels at grades BBC (or equivalent) which must include Maths.

Candidates with equivalent level 3 qualifications must hold or be on track on achieve one of the following:

  • BTEC Level 3 Extended Diploma DDM in an Engineering subject area, with a minimum of merit in Mathematics and Further Mathematics. (UCAS points: 128)
  • BTEC Level 3 National Diploma D*D* in an Engineering subject area, with a minimum of merit in Mathematics and Further Mathematics (UCAS points: 112)
  • T-level (Merit or above) in Construction: Design, Surveying and Planning. (UCAS points: 120)
  • Building Services Engineering Technician level 3 apprenticeship DD (UCAS points: 96) alongside grade Pass or Distinction at EPA

You are not eligible for this scheme if you currently hold or are working towards qualification at the same or higher level in a related subject or have already studied content from the qualification for this scheme. Please note that you will be required to provide original certificates and/or predicted grades as proof for your eligibility checks. You must be 18 years of age by 7th September 2026 to be eligible for this scheme. Please be advised that should you be successful in getting an offer for this scheme, your offer will be subject to a satisfactory medical which may include but is not limited to: drugs and alcohol screening, eye test and hearing test.

What Qualifications will I gain?

Successful apprentices will gain a BEng building services engineering degree and on completion of the apprenticeship scheme, will have fully satisfied the requirements for registration as an Incorporated Engineer by the Chartered Institution of Building Services Engineers (CIBSE).

Job overview

Our Engineers focus on the assets that form the foundation of our transport system. As a Building Services Engineering apprentice, you’ll help us provide our customers with a bright, clean, functional and welcoming environment that is safe and accessible to all, whilst keeping in line with passenger growth demands delivered through our line upgrades, renewals, enhancements and improvement programmes. You’ll help us retain and develop the in-house knowledge of our Electrical & Mechanical (E&M) assets as we upgrade our legacy assets to become safer, more reliable, automated and energy efficient.

What will I be doing?

As an apprentice, your 5-year development programme will be made up of up to placement rotations. Our aim is to equip you with the range of skills and experience you need for your successful career.We also understand that everyone’s career is different, so every apprentice’s journey is unique. Here’s an idea of what yours could look like:

Year 1

  • Placement 1 - London Underground Asset Performance & Capital Delivery – Renewals Programme --6 months – You will become familiar with the development of technical scopes, design preparation and installation/commissioning support for small scale local infrastructure performance renewals on London Underground stations & associated infrastructure. These small-scale projects could include platform re-lighting, asset resilience/strengthening and minor station refurbishments, substation ventilation strengthening and tunnel ventilation fan upgrade works.
  • Placement 2 - Docklands Light Railway (DLR) Beckton depot – 6 months – You will support the development of technical scopes for the DLR infrastructure. You will have the opportunity to support in the supervision of external design and installation. You will also be involved in commissioning support for medium scale performance improvements on the DLR system.

Year 2

  • Placement 3 – London Underground Asset Performance & Capital Delivery (APCD) – Enhancements Programme – 6 months – You will focus on refining your understanding of the technical scopes development and preparation of designs for projects on London Underground medium scale stations infrastructure. This will include preparing designs and installing or commissioning support for medium scale infrastructure performance enhancements. You will gain experience improving e.g. new station ticket halls, upgraded retail provisions in stations, substation ventilation and mid tunnel ventilation fans.
  • Placement 4 - Commercial development property development Programme – 6 months – You will be further refining your understanding of the technical scopes development and preparation of designs for a varying range of commercial development projects, in particular provision of retail units across the TfL estate.

Year 3

  • Placement 5 - Road/street lighting infrastructure – 6 months – You will have an opportunity to work on design preparation and installation of TfL’s street and road lighting infrastructure, focusing on performance improvements. You will be required to provide support for commissioning of these infrastructure improvements where necessary.
  • Placement 6 - Piccadilly Line Upgrade programme – 6 months – You will assist in the preparation of technical work scopes or designs for major tube line capacity upgrade works. There will be particular emphasis on design assurance, albeit with some design development for early lifecycle stage project. You will be involved in installation and commission support for provision of new line service control centres, equipment rooms and power infrastructure. You will also be involved in station air velocity mitigations & cooling upgrade works.

There will be ten mandatory placements in total, with the first six placements being directed and the remaining four placements having a degree of flexibility allowing the apprentice to tailor this to the scheme. Each placement has set learning objectives to support you in achieving the qualifications required for your apprenticeship. At the end of the 3rd year, you will choose to specialise in either the Electrical or Mechanical sub-discipline, with university modules selected to match this decision. The remainder of the scheme placements will support you in fine tuning the specialist knowledge of your chosen area. Your further placements could then involve working on aspects of projects such as London Underground Depots, technical support to the London Underground APCD teams, lifts and escalators engineering teams, commercial telecommunication teams or miscellaneous projects in the TfL Surface Tunnel Investment Programme.

Year 4-5

  • Flexible placements chosen by apprentice and adapted to suit chosen mechanical or electrical route as part of BEng degree route with university.

Where can this career take me?

Upon successful completion of this scheme, you could roll-off into a Junior Engineer position in one of our E&M sub-teams. From here, you could have the opportunity to continue developing into one of our resident technical discipline experts, an experienced Senior Project Engineer or even a Senior Leader. The current Technical Director of Engineering and the Chief Capital Officer for TfL both started their careers as apprentices demonstrating that our apprentices can aspire to senior leadership positions or anything else in between. The qualification you will earn is accredited by the Chartered Institution of Building Services Engineers (CIBSE)

What training and support will you get?

You will be working towards a level 6 qualification in Building Services Design Engineering. Typically, you will be required to attend University for 1 day per week during term time, this may at times be delivered remotely. Whilst on the scheme, we’ll support your technical development through a wide range of on-the-job practical experiences and placements. We’ll also support your professional development through a combination of classroom-led training courses, online training courses, mentoring opportunities and structured networking opportunities. You will receive one-to-one support throughout the programme from your mentor and Line Manager, with your scheme sponsor providing higher level support. You’ll also be connected to a ‘buddy’ who will be a more experienced apprentice from the scheme.

We also have an established Graduate and Apprentice Committee as well as an Alumni group, these groups are powerful networks in developing your understanding of the organisation, different apprenticeship schemes and opportunities to develop your career. Many current graduates and apprentices believe this to be a powerful support network, and they often hold apprentice only events that are very beneficial to your continued learning. Our award-winning teams will support your ongoing development, through a wide range of on-the-job practical experience and placements. We'll support your professional development through a combination of training, mentoring, and networking.

You'll also receive one-to-one guidance throughout the programme from your:

  • Placement manager: Responsible for your day-to-day management and support with your development
  • Scheme sponsor: A senior manager who acts as a technical and professional adviser and has line manager responsibility
  • Buddy: Usually an apprentice or graduate who gives support to you and ensure that you feel welcomed in the organisation
  • Development adviser: Supports your professional development through providing career coaching and career progression at TfL

If you are due to sit final exams or need to replace any certificates, these must be provided at a later stage. You will receive information and guidance around each assessment stage as you progress through your application. Please pay close attention to emails and deadlines provided noting you have 1 week to complete online assessments and we cannot re-issue these tests once the deadline passes. Assessment centres for apprentice roles will take place from March-May, please note that many roles only have 1 assessment day and we are unable to guarantee alternative dates. We are conducting assessment centres in person and virtually (role dependent).
