Job Description

Graduate Veterinary Officer

Train with the best.

The Royal Army Veterinary Corps (RAVC) plays a vital role in ensuring the well-being and performance of our Military Working Animals (MWAs). As a Veterinary Officer in the RAVC, you will be at the forefront of providing exceptional animal care, training, and preventive medicine for these highly valued animals.

In this role, you will have the unique opportunity to manage and enhance the capabilities of MWAs, working closely with your own team of dedicated soldiers. Your expertise and leadership will be crucial in maintaining the health and welfare of these animals, as well as optimizing their performance in various military operations.

While dealing with animal health issues similar to civilian practice, you will also face distinctive veterinary challenges that are specific to the Army. You will be responsible for advising on disease controls and implementing biosecurity measures to ensure the overall health and safety of both the animals and the personnel they work alongside.

Beyond the professional aspects, being a Veterinary Officer in the RAVC offers loads of rewarding experiences. You will have the chance to travel domestically and internationally, providing veterinary support wherever it is needed. You will have the opportunity to engage in sports and Adventurous Training, further enriching your military experience.

Joining the RAVC as a Veterinary Officer is not just a job, but a fulfilling and dynamic career that combines your passion for animals with your commitment to serving in the military. You will be part of a dedicated team, making a significant impact on the well-being and effectiveness of our Military Working Animals, while also enjoying a range of exciting opportunities and experiences.

Embark on the journey of a lifetime.

Earn over £50,540 upon completion of your basic and trade training. Begin your military training at the Royal Military Academy Sandhurst and upon finishing, you will be commissioned into the Army Medical Services.

Medical Bursary (Up to £60,000)

Available for individuals graduating with an Army approved veterinary degree and planning to serve in the Royal Army Veterinary Corps as a Vet for a minimum of 4 years. Receive £5,000 annually during your last three years of university, followed by a lump sum of £45,000 upon successful completion of Officer training. You may also receive an Army salary or a lump sum of £5,000 for two years of professional development. Apply while still in university, before January ends. Apply no later than your first year to be eligible for the full amount; the Army may grant bursaries for 1, 2, or 3 years. Pass the Army Officer Selection Board for professionally qualified officers and the Army Selection Board for Royal Army Veterinary Corps eligibility. Commence initial Officer training at Sandhurst before turning 37.

What are we looking for?

You will need to be between 17 years 9 months and 36 years and 11 months and hold a Veterinary Degree and Membership of the Royal College of Veterinary Surgeons. You’ll also need to pass a basic fitness test.
