Overview of Experience

Please give an overview of the insight and what was involved on a day-to-day basis.
Day to day involves standup, working in a team and learning everyday! It is usually tackling tickets you are working on during a sprint. You get to learn about a lot of the other teams around you which is super useful as you get to understand how your work fits in with other people's work. As a whole it is a very welcoming and friendly environment where collaboration is highly encouraged. 10 out of 10
What was it like understanding all about the business and potential roles available?
It was daunting at first. This had been my first experience working at a company and so seeing how many different teams there are and how it all fit together was definitely a lot. However, everyone is really nice and people are so happy to talk to you for a coffee chat. Using this has helped me definitely understand the business and potential roles available. From learning about career journeys to how I can progress my career, it has developed my knowledge a lot.

Skills Development

Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
I had previously never worked on the tech stack I have been working on now. I decided to work on the backend even though I had barely any experience but my team allowed me to challenge myself. I have been able to learn java using a springboot format as well as working with node. These skills have been invaluable to me as I get to see how it works on such a large scale basis.

Company Culture

How would you rate business leader involvement during the insight
5/5
What was the company culture and general atmosphere like?
I loved it, everyone was friends and welcoming. You can have a coffee chat with anyone and people do make time for you, even if you are an intern. People are chill and relaxed so there is no harsh deadline for coming in or leaving the office and people are encouraged to take breaks, focus on their health as they understand we are all human. There is a big push to develop each other to grow better

Overall Experience

To what extent did you enjoy the insight?
I did enjoy the insight. It showed me how I would be as a full time employee and how I would navigate such an environment. I loved seeing how the team works and being embedded within the team rather than being seen as an 'intern'. I was given real responsibilities and tasks that did develp my skills professionally as well as the chance to present to senior leadership which demonstrates the importance of recognising people's achievements.

Recommendations and Advice

Please rate the future employment prospects at American Express

Would you recommend American Express to a friend?
Yes
What tips or advice would you give to others applying to American Express
I would say be your authentic self. They recognise that you are human and as such be genuine, thoughtful and stay true to yourself. They emphasise people skills a lot as technical skills can be learnt but soft skills are harder to come by. Therefore, make sure your technical skills are sharp of course but also practise the behavioural part of the interview. If they see potential then they would want you so put your best foot forward.
