FPGA Software engineer Review

I was a software engineer for FPGAs. I would mainly write code in TCL which would be used for the generation of FPGA designs. I also created driver code as well as undertook extra projects such as helping with AI research. Day to day I would have meetings to talk about code progress, build and test different code implementations

I was given a lot of independence and responsibility with how I approached my tasks. I would be able to go off and work without needing external help for days at a time until I decided i needed help

I learnt a new language called TCL. I used Linux based systems much more and became acquainted with a ML framework called PyTorch. I became much more confident talking in meeting and making documentation for my code

My placement had a very good support system with 1-1 meetings and group meetings to talk about any issues. Membership outside my team were also ready to help with anything if needed

The culture was very friendly, everybody was interested int their work and what I was doing in mine. The management was very kind and understanding when it came to how long we needed for our work if if we needed time off e.g. an appointment

I enjoyed the placement very much. The social events were great and the team made work feel like home. Sometimes there were projects that were more menial and felt like they didn’t use my ability to it’s best but taking side projects meant there was always something interesting to spend time on
