What made you apply to Towers Watson?
Towers Watson was a company I was already aware of as they sponsored my University Mathematics society, however, one of my main reasons for applying was due to a recommendation from a friend. She had completed an internship in Pensions at Towers Watson the previous year and it really helped to get a personal account of what to expect on the internship. This kind of information is often difficult to come by for any internship application and so was invaluable.
Describe a normal day in the office
When I arrived I checked my emails as often my project supervisors would have emailed me overnight with some corrections or more tasks to do. These may be quite urgent so it’s important to be aware of your deadlines. I would then plan my day and get down to work. However, sometimes urgent pieces of work would be assigned to me, which meant I had to alter my schedule. There would also be the occasional pub lunch on Fridays too!
What did you enjoy most about your internship?
Throughout the internship you will be assigned to different project teams and given lots of different tasks to do. This is what I loved most about the internship because it meant that your work would vary from hour to hour, day to day, depending on how time demanding each assignment was. You are also the one that controls how you split your time between your tasks, allowing for some independency as well.
What advice would you give to someone planning their placement / internship?
Don't be cared of starting in an office not knowing anyone because everyone just wants to make you feel part of the team. For the first week or so you will mainly have training to help you learn the basics and it is a great way to get to know your fellow interns as well as your colleagues training you. Don’t forget that no one expects you to know everything already so ask as many questions as you need answering.
