Mechanical Engineer Placement
At Mott MacDonald
Placement (10 Months+)
What did you study at university?
I am currently studying Mechanical Engineering at the University of Nottingham.
What do you currently do at Mott MacDonald?
I am involved in the planning, designing, and implementation of ventilation systems for various tunnelling projects. This includes ensuring the safety and efficiency of ventilation in metro-systems, railway stations, road tunnels, and other underground structures.
What’s been most interesting work you’ve been involved in so far?
I am currently involved in the Lower Thames Crossing project. I am responsible for modelling the tunnels and cross-passages with Mott Macdonald’s own simulation software Mott Tunnels. I am finding it to be extremely engaging as I get to model different simulations such as fires along the tunnels and decide how we can best ensure safety for road users.
Have you been involved in anything in addition to you day job (for instance involvement with ECP network) and what does this involve?
I am involved in a weekly event called Inspiring Engineers. Myself and others from Mott MacDonald visit a school in the local area where we help the Sixth Form students with a project that they are working on. We help them apply the Engineering Design Process and support them in any Engineering related queries.
What attracted you to apply for a role with Mott MacDonald?
Mott MacDonald’s reputation, innovative and sustainable solutions, professional development opportunities, inclusive culture, global reach, and commitment to community attracted me to apply for a role with them.
What are the three things that make you look forward to coming into work each day?
I enjoy the collaborative team environment, the opportunity to work on innovative projects, and the chance to develop my skills and grow professionally. These aspects make coming into work fulfilling and motivating.
What’s your team like?
My team is diverse and lively. They often let me assist them with the projects they are working on meaning I get to take part in a wide range of projects and get to experience a variety of work Mott Macdonald is in involved.
The recruitment process can be quite daunting. What advice would you give to other graduates/ placement students looking to join Mott MacDonald?
Show enthusiasm, network with employees, and most importantly be authentic. Highlight your skills, experiences and demonstrate your passion for the industry and the role.
What has been your favourite sports or social event?
My favourite social event so far was Go-Karting. We had 10 teams of four, it was extremely competitive and had the adrenaline pumping. It was a great way to socialise and to meet other colleagues properly.
What is your favourite pastime?
I like to boulder and climb around the UK, although I am hoping to start climbing outside and in different countries too. I also like to hike and explore new places with my friends.
Where is your favourite place in the world?
My favourite place in the world are the Lofoten Islands in Norway.
Who is your inspiration?
My inspiration is Jackie Chan because he saved Jaden Smith from the bullies when Jaden Smith had just moved to Beijing from Detroit and had no friends.
