As a Tax Graduate at EY, Dean has quickly developed the skills needed to support clients, manage projects and work collaboratively with colleagues across the business.
For Dean, success in tax comes down to three key skills:
"The three main skills that you need to work in tax are proactivity, communication and attention to detail."
Being proactive is an important part of the role, particularly when working on new projects and carrying out analysis.
"You'll be the first one doing the analysis, so getting that project started is very important."
Alongside technical expertise, communication is essential when working with both clients and colleagues. Keeping teams updated and ensuring everyone is aligned helps projects run smoothly and deadlines stay on track.
"You need to let your team know where you are with your analysis."
Dean explains that effective communication is key to delivering high-quality work:
"To make sure that the work is delivered on time and to a good quality, you need to be able to communicate with your teammates and the client really well."
Attention to detail is equally important in tax, where accuracy matters every day.
"We're working a lot with numbers and percentages, so making sure those are right and accurate to ensure that the client stays tax compliant is a key part of the role."
For anyone considering a career in tax, Dean's experience highlights the importance of developing both technical and professional skills while working with clients to deliver meaningful outcomes.
