Graduate Project manager
At Computacenter
Graduate Scheme
Describe your role and what it entails.
I am a Project Manager at Computacenter as part of the graduate scheme, which gives me the opportunity to gain experience across a variety of projects. My role involves supporting and managing various different IT and technical projects . One of my key assignments was working on a Windows 11 upgrade project, where I was based on a customer site. In this role, I managed a team of engineers responsible for delivering the software upgrade, while also overseeing the rollout of new devices to end users. This involved coordinating activities, managing timelines, and ensuring a smooth experience for the customer.
What have been your highlights?
A key highlight of my experience so far has been the opportunity to work abroad for two months across two different countries to delivery elements of a project covering international locations. This was both professionally and personally rewarding, as it allowed me to gain valuable experience in new environments while developing my confidence and adaptability. It was a unique opportunity that significantly contributed to my overall learning.
What have been your challenges?
One of the main challenges I faced was managing an onsite team in a customer environment. This required a high level of organisation, coordination, and clear communication to ensure everything ran smoothly. Additionally, stakeholder management was initially a challenge, as it was my first experience working closely with customers and balancing different expectations.
What have you learnt from your experience in the role?
Through this role, I have developed a range of key skills, including leadership, conflict management, and prioritisation. I have also learnt the importance of proactive communication and not being afraid to ask for help when needed. These experiences have helped me grow both professionally and personally, building my confidence in managing people and projects.
What advice would you give to a student following in your footsteps?
My advice would be to not be afraid to ask questions or reach out for support. Everyone is very willing to help and share their knowledge, and making the most of that support network is invaluable when you are learning and developing in a new role. Additionally, enjoy the opportunities that come your way.
