What is a science graduate scheme?
Think of science graduate schemes as one to four year structured programmes that give new graduates like you the chance to try out (or even specialise in) various parts of the industry.
Most schemes use a rotation system where you spend between six to 12 months in different departments. For example, at AstraZeneca you’ll complete three eight-month placements across their R&D organisation, while the Environment Agency runs a four-year programme rotating through environmental science, catchment management, and regulatory work.
You’ll then get the chance to specialise in an area that you really enjoy for the rest of your time there.
Science graduate schemes are great because not only will you get some top-tier work experience. You’ll also benefit from working alongside industry professionals and mentors who will guide you through the whole process. By the time you complete the scheme, you’ll be 100% work-ready.
All schemes are different, but you could get on with:
Laboratory work. Conducting experiments and analysis samples.
Data analysis. Processing results, creating reports and finding patterns.
Fieldwork. Site visits, sampling and facility inspections.
Projects. Contributing to the business on goals that matter and make a difference.
Regulation. Working according to industry standards, including health and safety protocols and compliance.
Prefer to dive right in? Graduate jobs are entry-level roles that allow you to specialise in a specific field from day one. They usually have a much simpler application process and are great if you already know exactly what you want for your career. Want to know more? Have a read of our guide to grad jobs.
