Marketing Degree Apprenticeships

If you’re thinking of going to university to study marketing, you should consider doing a marketing degree apprenticeship. Not only would you not pay for your university degree, but you would also get paid a salary. You will also gain tons of experience for your CV.

An alternative to university, embarking on a marketing degree apprenticeship is fast becoming a popular choice.

DURATION: 3-5 years | AVG SALARY: £23,000 | WHEN TO APPLY: Sep - Mar

What happens in a marketing degree apprenticeship?

Typically, marketing degree apprenticeships last from three to five years and are just like a full-time job, apart from the time you spend studying for your degree at university. Normally, this is one day a week or around 20% of your degree apprenticeship.

Ultimately, you’ll be paid a salary like any other employee, and best of all, you’ll pay no tuition fees! On completion of your marketing degree apprenticeship, you’ll be awarded a degree qualification and up to 5 years' worth of relevant work experience on your CV.

To begin with, you’ll have to choose a company and a role. There are loads of different areas to work within marketing, some include:

CONTENT MARKETING

What will you do: This includes writing blogs, designing graphics, filming videos (not just TikToks!) and creating newsletters.

Fit for: If you love writing, this one is for you.

DIGITAL MARKETING

What will you do: Your focus will be on websites, email campaigns, paid ads (like Google Ads or Meta), SEO and analytics.

Fit for: If you’re into your tech and more of the mathematical side of life, this will be perfect for you.

PRODUCT MARKETING

What will you do: Your focus will be on promoting specific products, like launch messages, comparing your products’ performance compared to competitors and with product teams.

Fit for: If you tend to think outside of the box and like to work strategically, then this is definitely up your alley.

SOCIAL MEDIA MARKETING

What will you do: You guessed it, you will be creating posts, engaging with your followers, growing brand awareness and working with platforms like LinkedIn, TikTok and Instagram.

Fit for: if you love jumping on trends and engaging with socials

PR & COMMUNICATIONS

What will you do: You’ll write press releases, speak with journalists and manage the brand’s reputation.

Fit for: If you love to chat and like keeping up to date on the world’s current happenings, you should consider getting into PR & Comms.

MARKET RESEARCH

What will you do: This includes collecting and analysing data, running surveys and studying your competitors.

Fit for: If you’re into your data, market research was made for you.

MARKET ASSISTANT

What will you do: You will support marketing campaigns, write content, help plan events and track performance.

Fit for: This type of role is perfect if you want to try a bit of everything in marketing or are not too sure what your niche is yet.

Is it better to do an apprenticeship or a degree in marketing?

This will depend on you. Most universities offer marketing degrees (some more specialised like ‘Fashion Marketing’), but there are also plenty of employers that offer marketing degree apprenticeships (and universities offer the training for them!).

If you’re eager to get into the world of work straight after school - as well as avoid tuition fees - a degree apprenticeship may be a solid choice. You’ll do a mixture of academic learning and on-the-job training, plus you’ll gain skills and experience for your CV. Finishing your degree apprenticeship, you’ll be 5 years ahead of your peers on the career ladder.

However, if you prefer learning from taught material instead of being hands-on and want to get the full university experience, then maybe a normal degree is for you. There’s less responsibility, and you can think of your career path later.

Regardless of your choice, you’ll be able to get valuable insight into the marketing industry from both routes. Both paths are highly respectable and will ensure a great career for you.

Apprenticeships vs University

Here’s what a degree apprentice had to say about their apprenticeship with Samsung:

‘I believe that the apprenticeship is a wonderful experience. It opens doors for you to learn more about areas of the company you wouldn't get to normally see. The company helps you to mature into the opportunity as leaving straight from A levels is quite a huge change but with the professional support it helps a lot. It would be great to be able to utilise more of your own innovative ideas. Overall the company is very professional and high profile and it is a wonderful programme that can take you far in life.’ Degree Apprentice, Samsung UK

Here’s what a degree apprentice said about their time with BMW Group:

‘I enjoy the programme because everyone is so welcoming, helpful and kind as they always make time to check-in and see how you are as well as feeling comfortable to go and speak to others and that you understand the work that needs to be completed. My team also makes sure that I have a variety of work by enabling me to try work in different departments within the region as well as outside the region, therefore developing my skill set further and identifying which roles I feel I am most competent in and enjoy as well as solidifying my knowledge and continuing to learn.’ Degree Apprentice, BMW Group

How much do you get paid for a marketing degree apprenticeship?

Not only will you get paid for your work, but you don’t have to pay for your degree (no debt yay!).

Based on our reviews, on average you will be paid £23,000 annually. But this will depend on your employer and location.

In addition to this, with this marketing experience, you will be ahead of your peers who went to university via the traditional route. On average, apprentices earn up to £7,000 more a year than university graduates, according to a study performed by the London School of Economics.

How do you apply?

Entry requirements will vary depending on the employer, but they’ll usually expect the following qualifications:

  • Five or more GCSES passes (including maths and English)

  • Two or more A-levels or equivalent, like:

    • BTEC qualification

    • Level 4 apprenticeship

You’ll also have to be age 18 or older.

Roles tend to go live from September, the year before your degree apprenticeship starts. However, you will get more time to apply for degree apprenticeships than if you were just going to university, as you don’t have the strict UCAS deadline. Loads of marketing degree apprenticeships continue to open applications up until March, and sometimes even later.

Firstly, you will need to find a marketing degree apprenticeship that you want to apply for. You can find degree apprenticeship jobs on Higherin.

You then need to get your application ready. Unlike university, you don’t tend to write a personal statement. Instead, you are often required to write a CV and a cover letter. This is when you need to get the employer's attention.  Show off your skills, passion and experience to show them why you would be a great fit for their marketing degree apprenticeship.

You can also expect to do an interview and an assessment centre. Which sounds scary, but trust us, they don’t have to be bad! We have loads of career advice on how to ace these applications, so you don’t have to worry.
