Overview of Experience

Please give an overview of the virtual experience and what was involved on a day-to-day basis.
Attending coffee roulettes to network with the cohort, networked with trainee solicitors, associates and partners, understanding the operations and goals of CMS as a global, future-focusing law firm and working on various group tasks in skills workshops, business simulations and virtual escape room activity.
What was it like understanding all about the business and potential roles available?
I learned that CMS is client-focused and that many of the lawyers are forward-thinking, ready to cater to their clients needs. It also broadened my view on the firm that there are so many different aspects to the work it produces and it varies across the country. The international aspect of the firm really appeals to me as everyone seems connected and can work with other teams no matter where they are.

Skills Development

Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
I’ve learned a lot more about how to work online both in a team and independently.
I was also able to develop my ability to use Microsoft Teams, a platform which was fairly new to me.
I learned how to read different charts and income sheets from the business simulation.
The First Steps programme allowed me to increase my networking skills and challenged me to think about the bigger picture.

What was the company culture and general atmosphere like?
It was extremely motivating to gain a further insight into the firm’s culture and rebranding. I was able to learn how diverse and inclusive CMS is, which allowed me to really picture myself working at the firm in the future. All of the solicitors were extremely passionate about what they do and seemed like they thoroughly enjoyed working at the firm whether it is the fee-earning work or the work within the diversity networks.

Overall Experience

To what extent did you enjoy the virtual experience?
I really enjoyed the full virtual experience. It completely exceeded my expectations as a virtual insight scheme and the Early Talent team were there to assist and guide us throughout the whole week, ensuring everything ran as smooth as possible. I learned so much from this experience, not only about the firm but also about myself as an individual from this experience and which skills I need to work on.

Would you recommend CMS to a friend?
Yes
What tips or advice would you give to others applying to CMS
Be yourself in the application process, don’t try to be a candidate that you think the graduate recruitment team will want. Also make sure to prepare as much as possible so that you don’t feel out-of-depth during interviews - maybe practice with a friend or family member.
