Insight Programme Participant Review

During the CMS Insight Programme, I spent the week with the Banking and Finance team in the Aberdeen office. Throughout the week, I had the opportunity to complete classic trainee tasks, including Companies House checks, reviewing and organising transaction documents, and preparing a transaction bible. There were also plenty of networking opportunities, as well as the opportunity to attend a panel discussion with the CMS Women’s Network and hear about the experiences of those working at the firm. These experiences gave me and excellent insight into CMS’s culture. I also worked on an innovation project throughout the week, which I presented to partners at the end of the programme.

It was really valuable to gain a broader understanding of CMS beyond the legal work itself. Learning about the firm’s collaborative and future-facing approach, alongside experiencing its welcoming culture, gave me a much better sense of what it would be like to work at CMS. I was particularly interested in the international opportunities available while still being part of a close-knit team in the Aberdeen office. Hearing about the different teams, roles and career paths within the firm also helped me understand how each contributes to the wider business and gave me a clearer picture of the opportunities available at CMS.

The programme helped me develop my confidence, professionalism and commercial awareness. Presenting our innovation project to partners improved my confidence in communicating ideas to a professional audience, while completing trainee tasks such as Companies House checks and reviewing documents developed my attention to detail and ability to follow instructions. Balancing these tasks alongside the innovation project also strengthened my prioritisation and ability to manage multiple tasks at once.

The culture at CMS was very welcoming, collaborative and positive. Everyone was approachable and happy to answer questions or explain tasks, which made it easy to settle into the team. I also enjoyed listening in on team meetings and getting a feel for the team’s day-to-day dynamic, including joining them for their regular tea break. Overall, the atmosphere was professional but relaxed, and I felt comfortable asking questions and getting involved.

I really enjoyed the Insight Programme and getting involved throughout the week. I particularly enjoyed connecting with so many interesting people, learning from their experiences and gaining a genuine insight into life at CMS. I also really valued the opportunity to get involved in the team’s work and take part in the innovation project. Overall, it was a really enjoyable and valuable experience that strengthened my interest in pursuing a career in commercial law.

My main advice would be to be yourself and show genuine interest in CMS and commercial law. Take time to research the firm, particularly its values, collaborative culture and future-facing approach, and be prepared to explain why these appeal to you. I would also recommend making the most of every opportunity to ask questions, speak to people and learn from their experiences. Most importantly, be confident in yourself and don’t be afraid to get involved and push yourself outside of your comfort zone.
