Overview of Experience

Please give an overview of the insight and what was involved on a day-to-day basis.

Week long insight into the life of a lawyer at CMS, a world wide law firm. Gained valuable insight into a career in law and the many different aspects of legal careers available to me.
Variety of workshops, meetings and connecting with professionals in the profession I aspire to be part of one day and was incredibly valuable in building my confidence and setting out what my next steps were to make a career in law possible.

How would you rate the structure of the insight

What was it like understanding all about the business and potential roles available?

Inspiring to say the least, but also surprising. As a firm CMS is the perfect ideal firm, with so many different roles whilst also being a firm that is passionate about their sustainability and future development.

Skills Development

Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?

I developed my existing skills of asking questions and being comfortable with not fully grasping what was going on at all times which is difficult to admit, but this was helped with learning skills of confidence, communication, making connections and beginning to understand the legal system through advice with experts in the profession.

Company Culture

What was the company culture and general atmosphere like?

The atmosphere was so positive and we were treated so well. It definitely felt like a firm that thrived on teamwork and community and we even as one week long visitors into this community were treated as part of the team, invited to help ourselves to anything we may need and also treated to meals and lunches which is always a bonus

Overall Experience

To what extent did you enjoy the insight?

I loved it, I see myself in the future wanting to go back to CMS whether that’s temporary or permanent. It was incredible to immerse myself in the world of legal practice and learn from experts and people who were once perhaps in the same position as me. It definitely motivated me to chase a career in law and since have began that goal by entering into university to study my LLB.

What tips or advice would you give to others applying to CMS

Go into it with an open mind, the Connect Programme is centered around knowing that you won’t have an understanding of the law, but they stimulate your mind into thinking like a lawyer, there is some buzz about learning new information for the first time so just enjoy it.
I would also say be yourself. Your application into the Connect Programme is what will get your foot in the door and if they’re able to see what kind of person you are through your application, they will definitely want to see that in person.
