Overview of Role
Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis.
Developing and implementing projects onto the production line, usually arising from the continuous improvements scheme in the plant. This includes designing new fixtures, jigs, trollies, lifters and tools for new applications, and working with suppliers and operators to find a solution that works for all parties.
Were you given much responsibility during your placement / internship?
Yes, I was given responsibility on a range of projects, from short to long term. There was always assistance available though from those within the team which worked well

Skills Development
Have you learnt any new skills, or developed your existing skills?
I have definitely developed my communication skills through constant dialogue between shop floor operators, management and external suppliers. I have also improved my problem solving and critical thinking skills through projects involving tight constraints and limited budgets etc, while also learning how to use new CAD softwares

How much support and guidance did you receive during your placement / internship?
There was support/ guidance readily available from everyone in the manufacturing department, and everyone was approachable and offered advice when needed

What was the company culture and general atmosphere like?
Company atmosphere was generally friendly, especially within your department. Talking to some shop floor operators was a little difficult but that is to be expected

Overall Experience
To what extent did you enjoy your placement / internship?
It was quite mixed, sometimes there was not a lot of projects available, or work on existing ones reached a point where you were waiting on suppliers etc, and this was not so enjoyable, but when there was work to do it was generally interesting and thought provoking and I enjoyed this a lot

What advice would you give to others applying to Cummins
Make sure you get an understanding of your role and set realistic expectations of this before you join. Other than that just be friendly and ask those around you for help when needed - its always available. Set out what you are working on clearly, and work towards projects with deadlines first - keep a tracker of where you are at with everything you do
