Overview of Role
Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis.
I had developed an understanding of different asset classes and product types. Done through taking initiative and talking to team members. I also learnt how the solutions we offer differ depending on client type and needs.
Understood the importance of both strong external and internal relationships by shadowing.
Worked closely not only with your Sales colleagues, but also with Trading and Global Research to ensure we deliver the best service to our clients.
Learnt how to formulate views, with the aim that I can present a trade idea by the end of my internship.

Were you given much responsibility during your placement / internship?
Of course. I was given many tasks to help out the teams I was working in at the time. I had two desk rotation, which meant that I had to be able to meet their needs to the best of my ability as well as within their expectations. I did this by constantly asking for updates and asking them to review to see if there are any improvement points that could be given to me and my work.

Have you learnt any new skills, or developed your existing skills?
I had the chance to learn very fast on how to formulate market views, with the aim that I can present a trade idea by the end of my internship as well as during the market wraps. I had also built my communication skills by presenting market views and investment solutions.
Built my understanding of the various dynamics that drive markets. I had learnt the correlations between various factors and get a feeling for what to look out for when trading/selling a particular market.

Support and Guidance
How much support and guidance did you receive during your placement / internship?
I had received a lot of support through out my internship, I was very lucky in that sense! I am so glad that I was able to have such a supportive team around me. This was through my Line Managers who were in each of my desks as well as from my external support from outside the desk. I had also received a lot of support from the recruitment team who were always answering all my questions.

What was the company culture and general atmosphere like?
Very collaborative, loud and respectful.
I had worked alongside industry specialists, learning how the different areas of Markets & Securities Services work together to serve the broad range of needs of HSBC's clients. I was able to collaborate with a diverse community of peers who encouraged me to succeed. It was a learn environment. A lot of training delivered through interactive presentations, case studies and workshops, to help you keep up to date with the fast-paced environment of Markets & Securities Services.

Overall Experience
To what extent did you enjoy your placement / internship?
Very much! This was a world that I have never experienced before so was great to experience it from the lens of an amazing company like HSBC. I had such lovely people to work with who pushed and supported me through out the journey and I was also able to learn something new every minute off every day! This was an opportunity like no other! Very grateful to have had the chance to do this! Thank you!

What advice would you give to others applying to HSBC
When filling out an intern application, be sure to attach any recent and relevant examples of your work. If you haven’t got any work from a full-time role you’re able to share, relevant college work or details of any volunteer work can also be helpful. Be sure to highlight how any skills or experience gained relate to the internship role you’re applying for.
Practice practice practice!
Searching online for common questions interviewers ask prospective interns and rehearsing your answers.
Writing down questions you might want to ask the interviewer.
Role-playing an interview scenario with a friend or family member.
Practising non-verbal cues – including eye contact, where to place your hands, and so on.
