Overview of Role

Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis.
I design mechanical components for battery structures, working closely with a senior engineer. The components can also be to meet testing needs, or for prototype building.
A typical week consists of whole site engineering meetings, regular work, and then meetings with the people I am designing parts for, whether this is other mechanical engineers, validation engineers or system engineers
Were you given much responsibility during your placement / internship?
Not an reasonable amount. I am responsible for my own design work, but none of this has been of high significance- ie, not on the main battery product. However, I have been responsible for the design, development, sourcing and supply of components for a very important test, which meant I played a key role in supporting the validation engineers and I attended the test to ensure the parts were used correctly

Skills Development

Have you learnt any new skills, or developed your existing skills?
Yes, I have learnt a huge amount of skills. This includes engineering drawing skills/GD&T, I have learnt an entirely new CAD software and have a much greater technical understanding of engineering.
I have also been able to apply some knowledge from university within my role, but often I learn as I go

A massive, massive amount. I was paired up with a very talented senior engineer on my first day, who guides me and provides me my work. He is my go to for any questions and any support I need, whenever I need it.
All of my colleagues are super helpful and very very friendly- anyone will offer up their help if you ask, no matter what team.

Overall Experience

To what extent did you enjoy your placement / internship?
A great deal. My placement has confirmed for me that I do indeed want to be a mechanical engineer, and I know that there is a good company I can work with to achieve that goal.
I have a year left at uni, and I would much rather continue working than go back.
