Overview of Role

Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis.
My role is to take on technical 'work orders' (projects) as an analyst. This usually involves performing FEA/CFD/Dynamics analysis in order to validate a design another Cummins engineer has created. The products I work on are engine/generator components, ranging from bracket structural analysis, to CFD on engine lubrication systems. My day to day consists mainly of project work (developing a model, post processing results, writing technical reports etc.).
Were you given much responsibility during your placement / internship?
Yes, the projects I am given are from the teams 'hopper' of work requests. Therefore, all work I have done has helped the team keep up with work requests. For every project I have completed I have been the only analyst which is a big responsibility. However, I have a 'technical approver', who helps me whenever I need it and checks over my work. As my placement progressed they are needed less.

Skills Development

Have you learnt any new skills, or developed your existing skills?
I have learnt lots of simulation skills. I have done extensive Ansys (CFD & FEA) training which I use in most of my projects. Also I have learnt 1D CFD using GT software which I have used in some projects.
Also, I have taken many engine knowledge courses significantly increased my knowledge in this area.
I have also developed personal skills such as communication, presenting, applying knowledge, and many more.

Support and Guidance

How much support and guidance did you receive during your placement / internship?
I have received significant support and guidance. I have a manager, who I meet with every week to discuss what work I want to take on, training I want to do, if I want to try something new and if I am having any issues. I have a mentor for more general advice and help. I have a technical approver for help with project work specifically. Also all colleagues are happy to help always.

Company Culture

What was the company culture and general atmosphere like?
Culture is very friendly and inclusive, everyone is excited to help which makes asking questions easy and I have not felt annoying doing so. General atmosphere is relaxed, the hours are fairly flexible which is very nice, and I can work from home as often as I want to.

Overall Experience

To what extent did you enjoy your placement / internship?
I enjoyed my placement a lot, the work was rewarding and the workload was completely up to me so I was not stressed at any point. There are lots of placement students in the office so I have friends to have lunch with and chat to in the office. Also, the professional engineers are not patronizing, I am like any other colleague to them. The office location is somewhat isolated which is sometimes an issue.

Recommendations & Advice

Would you recommend Cummins to a friend?
Yes
What advice would you give to others applying to Cummins
When applying to Cummins, know that they provide significant training during the placement so you don't need to have even used the software your job role will require, or be an expert on engines. I would just be as enthusiastic as possible - the culture is great, and they want candidates who are excited, interested, and looking to learn.
