Overview of Experience

Please give an overview of the insight and what was involved on a day-to-day basis.
The insight day involved three days of networking, listening to talks from the firm's employees, Q&As and interactive activities. The talks covered a range of topics, from how the firm works to be a sustainable business to vacation scheme application hints and tips. Every day we were given the opportunity to network with other insight attendees, as well as having a lunch with some of the trainees of the firm. It was highly insightful and I gained a broad overview of the firm and its values.
What was it like understanding all about the business and potential roles available?
It was very interesting and highly informative. Since we listened to such a range of professionals, working in different practice areas and in various roles, a came away with a truly whole perspective of the business and the potential roles available. Not only did we learn about the operations of the business from a purely legal perspective, I also gained an insight about the firm's culture through various talks, notably: diversity networks, pro bono and being a responsible business. The three days ended with application hints and tips, as well as a glimpse of the roles available.

Skills Development

Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
My ability to network has certainly grown, as well developing my confidence to stand up and ask questions at the end of talks. However, one of the tasks was a litigation simulation, allowing me to gain skills regarding the importance of commercial awareness and communication when preparing for such cases. Within this simulation, we had to read multiple documents in order to determine what information was the most important. I therefore also improved my ability to work under pressure and pay attention to the minute details.

To what extent did you enjoy the insight?
I thoroughly enjoyed the insight scheme and would highly recommend it to any individual looking for a fast-paced, interactive insight into the legal profession. The insight was highly valuable and enjoyable, and I have come away having met some of the best people - including both the firm's employees as well as other insight attendees. Yes
What tips or advice would you give to others applying to DLA Piper
Just be yourself, as they aren't looking for specific individuals. All attendees were unique, and all with very different levels of experience. The application process involves an online application form, in which you have to write about a recent news article that interests you, followed by a telephone interview if you are successful. Do not worry about the telephone interview - it simply felt like a friendly chat in which I was asked about my motivations for applying and what I hoped to get out of the scheme.
