Overview of Role

Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis.

I worked as a Consulting Industrial Placement student at PA Consulting, mainly supporting DWP and DHSC on the national WorkWell programme. Day to day, the role was quite varied. I spent time analysing performance data, preparing presentations and materials for clients, speaking with stakeholders across government and NHS organisations, and helping organise and facilitate workshops and meetings. I also supported the team with tracking actions, identifying delivery risks and turning policy or programme information into practical guidance for local teams. One of the things I liked most was that I was involved in both the analytical side of the work and the client-facing side, so I could see how the analysis was actually used to support decisions and delivery.

Were you given much responsibility during your placement / internship?

Yes, definitely. I was given a lot more responsibility than I expected from a placement year, particularly once I had been on the project for a while and built trust with the team. I was trusted to manage relationships with a number of client and NHS stakeholders, prepare materials that went directly to senior clients, analyse programme performance and facilitate discussions with senior people in both DWP/DHSC and the NHS ICBs. I was also given ownership of pieces of work rather than just supporting someone else, which made the placement feel meaningful. The team were always there when I needed guidance, but I was given enough independence to make decisions, take initiative and feel genuinely accountable for the quality of my work.

Skills Development

Have you learnt any new skills, or developed your existing skills?

Definitely. I developed a lot of the core consulting skills I had only really encountered in theory before. The biggest improvements were in stakeholder management, client communication and structured problem solving. I became much more confident speaking with senior stakeholders, facilitating discussions and adapting how I communicated depending on the audience. I also improved my analytical skills through working with programme performance data in Excel and became better at turning analysis into clear, practical recommendations. More generally, I became more comfortable managing competing priorities, taking ownership of work and working through ambiguity without always having a clear answer at the start.

Support and Guidance

How much support and guidance did you receive during your placement / internship?

Support and guidance were available throughout the placement through both my project team and the wider support structure, including my line manager and placement buddy. The approach was generally quite light-touch, with regular check-ins rather than constant supervision, which I found worked well because it gave me the freedom to take ownership of my work and develop independently. At the same time, I always felt there was someone I could contact if I needed advice or support.

Company Culture

What was the company culture and general atmosphere like?

The culture was friendly, supportive and quite down to earth. People were generally very approachable regardless of seniority, and I never felt uncomfortable asking questions or reaching out for help. Within my project team there was a good balance between being trusted to get on with my work independently and knowing support was there when I needed it. I also found the wider culture inclusive, with plenty of opportunities to meet people outside my immediate team through office events, networks and placement activities.

Overall Experience

To what extent did you enjoy your placement / internship?

I enjoyed the placement a lot. The biggest reason was that the work felt meaningful and I was given genuine responsibility rather than just observing from the side. I liked being involved in a large public-sector programme, working directly with clients and seeing how the analysis and materials I produced could influence real decisions and delivery.
I also enjoyed the variety. Some days were more analytical, while others involved stakeholder meetings, workshops or preparing client materials, so the role rarely felt repetitive. There were naturally busier periods and some more routine tasks, but overall the experience gave me a much better understanding of consulting and confirmed that it is the type of career I want to pursue.

Recommendations & Advice

Would you recommend PA Consulting to a friend?

Yes

What advice would you give to others applying to PA Consulting

Be yourself and be clear on why consulting, and why PA specifically. The recruitment process rewards people who can structure their thinking, communicate clearly and work well with others, so I would focus on showing those qualities rather than trying to give a “perfect” answer. Once you join, take every opportunity to get involved, ask questions and put yourself forward for responsibility. The more proactive you are, the more you get out of the placement, and people are generally very willing to help if you ask.
