Overview of Role
Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis.
My initial responsibilities included supporting corporate acquisition research, contributing to the development of an innovation playbook for a major banking client, and producing presentation materials and guidance documents.
Later in my placement, I undertook a secondment with Future of Greater Manchester, where my day-to-day work focused on leadership programme coordination, event delivery and stakeholder engagement. This involved preparing programme materials, coordinating participants and mentors, supporting workshops and events, and engaging with professionals from across the public and private sectors.
Alongside project work, I also participated in internal initiatives, professional development activities and wider business events.
Were you given much responsibility during your placement / internship?
During my earlier projects, my responsibilities were generally more structured and task-focused, with work often assigned and reviewed by senior colleagues. However, as I became more familiar with the work, I was gradually trusted with greater ownership of individual deliverables and opportunities to contribute directly to stakeholder sessions.
My secondment with Future of Greater Manchester offered considerably more independence, particularly through supporting live programme delivery, engaging directly with stakeholders and identifying opportunities to contribute beyond my assigned responsibilities.
Overall, I felt that responsibility was something I developed progressively rather than being given immediately. The experience taught me the importance of demonstrating initiative and actively seeking opportunities to take ownership of my work.

Skills Development
Have you learnt any new skills, or developed your existing skills?
My initial consulting projects helped strengthen my analytical and presentation skills, including synthesising complex information, producing client-facing materials and working within iterative project delivery processes.
As my placement progressed, I developed greater confidence in communicating with senior professionals, contributing to meetings and engaging with stakeholders. My secondment with Future of Greater Manchester was particularly valuable in developing my organisational, networking and programme coordination skills through supporting live events and leadership programmes.
Perhaps my most significant development was learning to take greater initiative, communicate my contributions effectively and identify opportunities to add value beyond my immediate responsibilities. This helped me become more confident, adaptable and independent in a professional environment.

Support and Guidance
How much support and guidance did you receive during your placement / internship?
One aspect I particularly appreciated was the willingness to listen to my interests and help me explore opportunities that aligned with them. When I expressed an interest in more public sector-focused and Manchester-based work, I was supported in pursuing opportunities that ultimately led to my secondment with Future of Greater Manchester.
Support within individual project teams varied depending on the working environment and demands of the project. In some of the more remote environments, guidance was primarily task-focused, and I found that actively seeking feedback and communicating my availability was important.
Overall, I felt well supported on a personal and professional level, particularly by my line manager, who played an important role in helping me get the most out of my placement.

Company Culture
What was the company culture and general atmosphere like?
Colleagues were consistently friendly and approachable, although I found that social interaction often required some individual initiative, particularly as a placement student. The atmosphere was generally quite work-focused, with most conversations remaining within a professional context rather than developing into closer personal relationships.
One aspect I particularly appreciated was the accessibility of senior colleagues. Despite the natural hierarchy within a consulting organisation, some of the most senior individuals I encountered were also among the most welcoming, taking an active interest in my development and making an effort to involve me.
Overall, I felt accepted and respected as an individual, without any pressure to conform beyond normal professional expectations. While the culture was not especially close-knit in my experience, it was a comfortable and supportive environment in which to work.

Overall Experience
To what extent did you enjoy your placement / internship?
I felt I had the space to tackle the work the way I wanted, while also being guided through some of the bigger parts of consulting life. I'd particularly like to mention that my line manager was a great voice to have throughout the placement, and that contributed a lot to streamlining the experience.
