Strategy & Economics Consultant, Industrial Placement Review

I worked as a Strategy & Economics Industrial Placement student, supporting project teams across transactions, strategy and policy advisory. Day to day, this involved research, data analysis, building financial and market models, creating client presentations, and working closely with consultants and senior team members.

Yes, I was given a high level of responsibility from early on. I regularly owned individual workstreams and analysis, contributed directly to client deliverables and had opportunities to present my work to senior colleagues and clients, while still having support available when needed.

Yes. I developed my analytical and problem-solving skills significantly, particularly in market analysis, financial modelling and structuring complex problems. I also improved my Excel and PowerPoint skills, as well as my communication, presentation and stakeholder-management skills through working closely with clients and senior colleagues.

Most of the support and guidance came through learning on the job. I was fortunate to work with great teams who were always willing to give me their time, explain their approach and help me develop. This meant I learnt a lot throughout the placement while still being given the independence to take ownership of my work.

The culture was very supportive, collaborative and welcoming. There was a strong sense that you get out what you put in, with plenty of opportunities to take on responsibility, get involved in different projects and learn from more experienced colleagues. People were approachable and willing to help, which made it a very positive environment to work in.

I thoroughly enjoyed the placement and would recommend it to others. It gave me a much clearer understanding of consulting and confirmed that it is the type of career I want to pursue. I also valued the variety of work and the chance to experience different types of projects across the year.
