Mechanical Engineering Intern Review

I worked on an in-house project to create a high-throughput single cell encapsulation system. This involved conducting a literature review and selecting the route forward using a selection matrix. The day-to-day involved lab testing of our system, CAD modelling, and networking with colleagues to pursue my professional development

The project was run between myself and one other intern, and we were given full control over our £1000 budget. We were able to decide our own route forward in the project, and had biweekly meetings with project supervisors to discuss ideas, progress and challenges.

I have developed my prototyping and CAD skills, as well as I now have a fundamental understanding of microfluidics and droplet generation. I have learnt how to communicate and present effectively. I also learnt key lab practices such as filling out a risk assessment and keeping a detailed test record.

I was assigned a buddy that I met up with on multiple occasions to talk about my welfare and any support I would need. I had weekly meetings with my line manager to discuss progress towards my skills. I also received technical guidance from my project supervisors when I got stuck with the project. I received guidance on career pathways and PhD's.

The company culture was really friendly, everybody was really welcoming and looking to network and make new connections. The office was laid out nicely in an open plan, with kitchens and shared spaces allowing for chats to colleagues. There was a table-tennis and table football table! There was also weekly sessions of football and basketball which were really fun. We also had a day of volunteering at a local home farm.

I really enjoyed it! It was an unforgettable experience and that was because of the intense but rewarding project, and how everyone was so willing to talk about their experience and studies.
