Overview of Role

Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis.

I worked as an Economic and Strategy Analyst, supporting public-sector clients across a range of projects. My role involved economic and quantitative analysis, research, data analysis, current-state assessments, options appraisals and developing client reports and presentations. I also contributed to bids and business cases, while working closely with project teams and clients to develop practical recommendations. Day-to-day varied with the client and type of work I was doing, usually there would be a few team meetings, client meetings, and then the rest of the day would be spent researching or analysing data, then putting it together.

Were you given much responsibility during your placement / internship?

Yes. I was given a significant level of responsibility, particularly as the placement progressed. I was trusted to manage individual pieces of work independently, conduct analysis and research, contribute to client deliverables and present findings to clients. I was also expected to manage competing priorities across projects and proactively seek out opportunities for my own development.

Skills Development

Have you learnt any new skills, or developed your existing skills?

Yes. I developed my economic skills through applying university knowledge to real-world problems, while also improving my data analysis and visualisation skills, particularly in Excel and Power BI. I also developed my communication, presentation, problem-solving, teamwork and time-management skills, as well as gaining a better understanding of business cases and the commercial side of consulting.

Support and Guidance

How much support and guidance did you receive during your placement / internship?

I received a good balance of support and independence. At the start of the placement, I received guidance from colleagues and my project teams, but I was increasingly trusted to work independently as my confidence and experience developed. I could ask for support or feedback when needed, while also being encouraged to take ownership of my work and proactively manage my own development. I had a fortnightly meeting with my line manager.

Company Culture

What was the company culture and general atmosphere like?

The company culture was friendly, collaborative and sociable. I found people across the business to be approachable and willing to help, and there were plenty of opportunities to get involved outside of day-to-day project work through socials, networking and wider company activities. The atmosphere was professional but relaxed, and I quickly became comfortable working with colleagues at different levels of seniority.
