Overview of the Role

Overall, how would you describe your experience at Transport for London?

My experience at TfL has been overwhelmingly positive. The organisation genuinely goes above and beyond to support its graduates, placing a strong emphasis on both wellbeing and professional development. There are clear structures in place to ensure graduates are not overworked or mistreated, and support is always readily available.
One aspect I particularly value is the graduate support structure. In addition to your placement manager, you are assigned a line manager who is independent from your day-to-day role. This provides an impartial person you can turn to for guidance, concerns, or career advice.
The work-life balance is excellent. As someone who does not drink, I have never felt pressured to participate in social activities, nor have I felt that opting out of after-work events would negatively impact my career prospects. TfL offers plenty of opportunities to get involved, but it is very much up to the individual how they choose to engage.
That said, you get out what you put in. If you are proactive, take initiative, and demonstrate care, openness, and adaptability, there are countless opportunities to learn, grow, and make an impact. If those qualities do not resonate with you, the programme may not be the right fit.
I also feel the pay is fair, particularly when considered alongside the benefits package, development opportunities, and level of responsibility given to graduates. Career progression is certainly possible, but like most things at TfL, it is ultimately what you make of it.

What are the main responsibilities of the role and which elements of the role do you enjoy the most?

There are no set responsibilities within the role as the graduate scheme is rotational. Instead, you work with your placement manager to agree objectives that align both with the needs of the project and your own career aspirations. This flexibility allows you to gain exposure to a wide range of areas while developing skills that are relevant to your interests and long-term goals.
Making an impact is something TfL actively encourages. Graduates are given meaningful work and are supported in finding a role and team that best suit their strengths and ambitions by the end of the scheme. There is a genuine focus on helping individuals build a career that is both fulfilling and aligned with their capabilities.
What I particularly enjoy about the scheme is the balance between business-focused work and data analysis. It is not a purely technical role, which makes it ideally suited to people who enjoy using data to solve problems and inform decisions, while also engaging with stakeholders, strategy, and the wider business context.

To what extent does your role give you the opportunity to contribute meaningfully and feel valued by your team?

5/5
My role provides plenty of opportunities to contribute meaningfully and feel valued. I am trusted with work that has a real impact, encouraged to share ideas, and supported by colleagues who genuinely invest in my development and success.

How well do you feel the role is preparing you for your future career?

How would you rate the extent to which you were developing new or existing skills through formal training and your day-to-day role?

5/5
I would rate it highly. Throughout my time on the scheme, I have developed a range of new and existing skills through both formal training and hands-on experience. This has included completing a BCS Diploma in Business Analysis, gaining experience with Power BI, Microsoft Copilot and Python, developing dashboard creation skills, and a Project Management qualification. The combination of structured learning and practical application has been invaluable for my professional development.

Recommendations & Advice

Would you recommend Transport for London to a friend?

Yes

Why?

I would recommend TfL to a friend because it offers a supportive and well-structured environment where graduates are encouraged to develop both personally and professionally. The work is meaningful, the work-life balance is excellent, and there are plenty of opportunities to gain new skills and make an impact. TfL also invests heavily in its people, providing strong support networks, valuable training, and exposure to a wide range of projects, making it a great place to start and grow a career.

How well did the role match your expectations based on the recruitment process?

5/5

When considering the recruitment & onboarding process, have you any specific tips or advice you would give to others applying to Transport for London?

My advice would be to be yourself and focus on demonstrating curiosity, initiative, and a willingness to learn. TfL values people who are adaptable, open-minded, and genuinely interested in making an impact. During onboarding, take advantage of opportunities to network and build relationships, as these connections can be invaluable throughout the graduate scheme. Most importantly, make the most of the support available and be proactive in shaping your own development and career path.
