Campus Ambassador Review

As a Campus Ambassador of Herbert Smith Freehills, I am not assigned with daily tasks but tasks to be finished from time to time. My main role is to represent and promote the firm to students of all disciplines at my university. I design social media content and manage the Instagram page. Other times I use different means such as sending direct emails and holding a booth at a fair to achieve the goal. Besides, I assist the graduate recruitment team upon their visit and presentation on campus. Furthermore, I work with fellow Campus Ambassadors to launch a negotiation competition. The role offers some flexibility as long as goals are met.

I have been given significant responsibility and freedom during the role as a Campus Ambassador. I am solely responsible for running and managing the social media pages. Herbert Smith Freehills offers freedom for me to create content based on my styles, then I am able to request for approval to publish content created by myself. Similarly, the firm trusts other Campus Ambassadors and I to launch and organise a negotiation competition from scratch. At the same time, the firm gives sufficient support to ensure we can manage the responsibilities given.

I believe I have activated my creativity, especially in times I have to create social media content like posts, reels, stories, etc. I have learned marketing in terms of some effective methods to promote the firm, as well as digital literacy to utilise social media. I also have further developed a lot of my existing skills. For instance, I enhanced my research skills to build a better understanding of the firm in order to effectively promote it to my fellow schoolmates. Moreover, I strengthened my communication skills from speaking with many strangers at a brand ambassador fair, which students met representatives from different organisations.

First, I received guidance from Herbert Smith Freehills when I first started the role. The firm provided induction day covering topics including roles and responsibilities, especially on usage of social media. As such, I received sufficient guidance to begin our role. Since then, the firm has been very supportive. The graduate recruitment team is always there to support and is responsive when I get in touch regarding arising issues. The firm also mailed materials like flyers which would support our promotion at different events on campus.

I have not yet been to the office yet. However, based on my online interaction with the staff from Herbert Smith Freehills, they are very friendly and supportive to each other. Because of the role, I have exclusive opportunity to have a virtual meeting with two trainee solicitors. They were both very enthusiastic to encourage aspiring solicitors, as well as sharing their experience and insights. Some representatives from the firm visited my university and delivered a presentation. They were approachable and stayed behind to network with students.

I enjoy my role as a Campus Ambassador of Herbert Smith Freehills. First, the role allows me to gain more insights into the firm and builds a connection fairly early on, compared to many other second year law students. Besides, the firm gives me responsibility and support at the same time. I have gained and developed skills such as communication, marketing, organizational skills, etc. The amount of work has been reasonable as well. I believe the experience would benefit my future career in the legal industry.
