Overview of Role

Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis.

I provided marketing and communications support for the Media and Digital Culture Research Group at Manchester Metropolitan University. I was responsible for refreshing the research group's website content and supporting the launch of its social media presence.

Were you given much responsibility during your placement / internship?

I was given a lot of autonomy and flexibility in when and how I worked. My managers also encouraged creative thinking and allowed me to "make the role my own".

I developed existing skills in content creation and social media marketing while also having the chance to improve my design thinking skills and extend my expertise using WordPress

I was encouraged to work with a lot of autonomy, so there was more guidance at the start of the role, after which I was able to make progress quickly on my own.

MMU's working culture generally is wonderful, filled with great people, and this role was no different to my other experiences working with the university.

It was a great opportunity for me to get creative and do work I enjoy on a flexible schedule around my studies. It was a very valuable experience.

What advice would you give to others applying to Manchester Metropolitan University

The Jobs4Students board at MMU has lots of opportunities to work somewhere within the university. In my experience it's by far the best resource for finding flexible part-time work as a student in Manchester, compared to standard job boards. It's also really well-organised when it comes to things like managing interview procedures and submitting timesheets.
