Sustainable Innovation Challenge Volunteer Review

The insight was in partnership with Manchester City, The Berlin School of Economics and Law, Ulster University, and University of Liverpool. On the first day we were put into groups with students from the other universities. After that we were given a presentation about Manchester City and the Co-Op Live arena at the Etihad Stadium campus, followed by presentations by companies/groups that are investors or partners of Manchester City, such as CyanLines and Friends of Medlock Valley. We were told about the plans for Medlock Square on the Etihad Campus, to be a sustainable hub of entertainment while keeping the local community in mind. Then we were given a tour of the Etihad Campus, and walked the CityLink route that connects the city center to the Etihad Campus. After the tour we had some time to share the ideas we had thought of on the tour with our group. On the second day we were given the full brief - to create a proposal regarding the CityLink route to encourage more people to use the walkway while ensuring a stronger sense of community and sustainably in Manchester. We were given 2 hours to come up with our final ideas and prepare a pitch. We had the opportunity to talk with industry professionals about our proposals so we could get feedback before we presented our final pitches to them. We then had 5 minutes to present our pitches to the panel of four industry professionals and answered any follow up questions they had after the 5 minutes was over. Once all the groups had finished their pitches the panelists decided which 5 groups would be the finalists that would deliver their pitches to everyone. The panelists then decided on the top 3 winning groups.

It was insightful finding out about the plans for Medlock Square knowing the plan to expand the type of entertainment they offer, as well as making sure they adhere to their values of staying sustainable. This insight also made me realise the different job fields and roles that are involved when planning for sustainable innovation, as some of the industry professionals we had the chance to talk to came from a range of different job sectors.

I've developed my teamwork skills further with this insight, and learnt how to deliver a proper elevator pitch.

It was a really friendly atmosphere, I didn't know anyone on this insight but it felt very easy to talk to new people, network and make friends.

I really enjoyed this insight. It was fun working in a group of people from different backgrounds and I enjoyed getting experience working on a brief set by an actual company.
