Overview of the Role

Overall, how would you describe your experience at Thales?

Overall, I've had a positive experience at Thales. The graduate scheme has been a useful way to gain exposure to different areas of the business, develop my understanding of contract management, and build professional skills. The hybrid working approach offers good flexibility, and I've enjoyed working with supportive colleagues in a friendly and collaborative culture.
As with most roles, there are aspects that are more interesting than others, and the day-to-day experience can vary depending on the placement and the manager you're working with. The quality of learning opportunities and responsibility given can differ between teams. That said, I've enjoyed my time on the scheme so far and feel it has provided a solid foundation for my career.

What are the main responsibilities of the role and which elements of the role do you enjoy the most?

My role involves supporting contract management activities across the project lifecycle, including contract administration, commercial management, change management, stakeholder engagement, and helping ensure contractual obligations are met. As a graduate, I've also had the opportunity to learn about different aspects of the business and gain exposure to a variety of projects and teams.
The elements I enjoy most are the variety of work and the commercial aspects of the role. No two days are exactly the same, and I enjoy understanding how commercial decisions are made, managing customer and supplier relationships, and seeing how contracts support wider business objectives. The graduate scheme has also provided valuable learning and development opportunities alongside the day-to-day role.

To what extent does your role give you the opportunity to contribute meaningfully and feel valued by your team?

4/5
The extent to which you can contribute meaningfully and feel valued tends to depend on both the placement you are in and the effort you put into seeking out opportunities. Managers and the nature of the project you are working on play a significant role in creating opportunities and providing responsibility, so experiences can vary between teams. In my experience, those who are proactive and willing to get involved are often able to take on meaningful work and make a visible contribution. When that support and opportunity are present, it is easy to feel like a valued member of the team rather than just a graduate observer.

How does your compensation package - including perks & benefits - fairly remunerate you for the work you do?

3/5
The package feels broadly fair rather than exceptional. The salary is competitive for a graduate role in the defence sector, and the graduate scheme provides valuable development opportunities and exposure to real responsibility. The hybrid working arrangements offer some flexibility. Overall, I feel appropriately compensated for my level of experience and the opportunities available.

How well do you feel the role is preparing you for your future career?

4/5
The role has prepared me well for my future career by providing exposure to real business challenges and giving me meaningful responsibility from an early stage. Rather than simply observing, I have been able to contribute to genuine contract and commercial activities, work with a range of stakeholders, and gain experience on complex programmes. The graduate scheme has also provided opportunities to develop my knowledge and understanding of the wider business. Overall, I feel I am building valuable skills and experience that will benefit my long-term career.

How would you rate the extent to which you were developing new or existing skills through formal training and your day-to-day role?

4/5
The extent to which you develop new and existing skills can vary depending on your placement and manager, as different teams offer different experiences and opportunities. In general, however, there are good opportunities to learn through both formal training and day-to-day work. I have found that the combination of structured development through the graduate scheme and practical experience in the role has helped me build both technical and professional skills. Those who are proactive and willing to take advantage of the opportunities available can gain a significant amount of experience and development throughout the scheme.

Experience & Company Culture

How is the support you receive?

4/5
The support available through the graduate scheme has been good overall. There are a range of support mechanisms in place, including access to HR, regular meetings with line managers, and scheme sponsor check-ins, which help provide guidance and support throughout the programme. I have personally felt well supported during my time on the scheme. That said, the day-to-day experience can vary depending on your placement and manager, as some teams are naturally more engaged and hands-on than others. In general, however, there are good support structures in place, and help is readily available when needed

How is your work-life balance?

5/5
My work-life balance has been very good overall. The culture encourages a healthy balance between work and personal time, and I have found colleagues and managers to be respectful of working hours. I am generally able to maintain a consistent working pattern, which allows me to manage both professional and personal commitments effectively.
There is also a degree of flexibility available, including options such as hybrid working and, in some areas, compressed working arrangements. While there are occasionally busier periods where additional hours may be required, particularly around key milestones or deadlines, this has never felt unreasonable for a commercial role within the defence industry. Overall, I feel the company takes employee wellbeing seriously and is thoughtful in its approach to workload and working hours.

What is the organisational culture, values and general atmosphere like?

4/5
The organisational culture is generally friendly, welcoming, and inclusive. I have found people to be approachable and willing to offer support, which helps create a positive working environment. The company also offers hybrid working arrangements, with employees typically able to work from home two days per week, which provides a good balance between in-person collaboration and flexibility. As with any organisation, there can be periods where the atmosphere becomes more pressured, particularly around key project milestones, bids, or delivery deadlines. However, this has generally felt proportionate to the work being undertaken and has not detracted from what is otherwise a positive working environment. Overall, I have found Thales to be a pleasant place to work, with a culture that values collaboration, professionalism, and employee wellbeing.

How would you rate Thales initiatives when it comes to equality, diversity, inclusion and accessibility?

4/5
Equality, diversity, inclusion, and accessibility initiatives have not had a significant direct impact on my personal experience. However, the company appears to be committed to these areas and offers a range of employee networks, support groups, and initiatives aimed at supporting people from different backgrounds and communities. While I have not been heavily involved in these programmes myself, there seem to be plenty of opportunities and resources available for those who wish to engage with them. Overall, my impression is that Thales takes diversity and inclusion seriously and has established a supportive environment where employees can access relevant networks and support if needed.

How would you rate Thales CSR (Corporate Social Responsibility) initiatives?

5/5
Thales’ approach to Corporate Social Responsibility has been positive from my experience. There are a range of opportunities for employees to get involved in volunteering and community-focused activities, with graduates in particular encouraged to take advantage of these opportunities, with around 80 hours of volunteering leave available. The company also places emphasis on topics such as sustainability and environmental awareness through training and wider initiatives.
While CSR activities are not a major part of my day-to-day role, it is clear that the company makes an effort to support volunteering, environmental responsibility, and broader social impact initiatives. Overall, I feel Thales demonstrates a genuine commitment to CSR and provides employees with opportunities to contribute beyond their core role.

Recommendations & Advice

Would you recommend Thales to a friend?

Yes

Why?

Yes, I would recommend Thales to a friend. Overall, I have found it to be a good place to work, with a supportive culture, strong development opportunities, and the chance to gain meaningful responsibility early in your career.
My experience has been positive, particularly through the graduate scheme, which has provided exposure to real projects and opportunities to develop both professional and commercial skills. The company offers a friendly and welcoming working environment, a reasonable degree of flexibility, and good support networks.
As with any large organisation, experiences can vary depending on your placement and manager, but overall I would recommend Thales to someone looking to build experience and develop their career within the defence sector.

How well did the role match your expectations based on the recruitment process?

3/5
The role matched many of my expectations in terms of the graduate scheme structure, development opportunities, and overall benefits. The recruitment process provided a good understanding of how the scheme operated and the support available to graduates.
However, I was expecting the role to have a greater legal focus than it has in practice. While contract management does involve working with contractual terms and obligations, the role is more commercially focused than I had anticipated. That said, I have still found the work interesting and have gained valuable experience through the commercial, stakeholder management, and project-facing aspects of the role.
Overall, my expectations were partially met. The reality of the role differed somewhat from what I initially envisaged, but the experience has still been positive and provided useful opportunities for development.

When considering the recruitment & onboarding process, have you any specific tips or advice you would give to others applying to Thales?

Prepare thoroughly for the recruitment process and be ready to discuss your experiences in detail. Many of the interview topics and competency areas are provided in advance, so it is worth taking the time to think through relevant examples and how they demonstrate your skills and strengths. It is also important to develop a good understanding of Thales, the work it does, and the values it promotes. Being able to explain why you are interested in the company and how your own behaviours and experiences align with its values will help you stand out. Overall, good preparation and clear, structured examples are key to performing well throughout the process.
