Overview of Role

Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis.

I support the environmental management of major rail infrastructure projects by carrying out site inspections, monitoring environmental performance, reviewing mitigation measures, managing waste and environmental data, updating Environmental and Sustainability Management Plans (ESMPs), investigating complaints, and producing environmental communications and training materials. I also work closely with site teams, contractors, and stakeholders to ensure compliance with environmental regulations and project requirements while helping drive continual environmental improvement across the route.
Key activities I regularly undertake include:
Conducting environmental site inspections and compliance audits.
Reviewing and tracking environmental mitigation measures and biodiversity requirements.
Managing waste data, Waste Transfer Notes (WTNs), and Site Waste Management Plans (SWMPs).
Updating environmental documentation, procedures, and management plans.
Investigating environmental issues such as noise, dust, and stakeholder complaints.
Producing environmental communications, toolbox talks, posters, and reports.
Liaising with site teams, contractors, Network Rail representatives, and external stakeholders.

I am responsible for supporting environmental compliance and sustainability across major rail construction projects through site inspections, environmental monitoring, waste management, mitigation tracking, environmental reporting, stakeholder engagement, and the development of environmental communications, systems, and management documentation

During my placement I have developed practical skills in environmental compliance, site inspections, waste management, sustainability reporting, environmental data analysis, stakeholder engagement, and environmental communications. I have also strengthened my ability to work independently, manage projects and datasets, investigate environmental issues, and support the delivery of environmental requirements across major rail infrastructure projects.
