Overview of Role

Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis.

I completed a Year in Industry placement at TfL/Places for London, spending the first half of my placement in the LU Railway Structures team and the second half in the Infrastructure Protection team.
In Railway Structures, I supported asset management, engineering design, engineering assurance, technical research, and project coordination activities. This included developing an asset criticality tool, supporting engineering standards and research projects, contributing to design work, organising stakeholder workshops, and coordinating with both internal and external stakeholders.
In Infrastructure Protection, I reviewed development proposals and construction activities that could affect London Underground assets and operations. My day-to-day responsibilities included reviewing technical submissions, undertaking desktop studies and site visits, identifying engineering constraints, supporting Engineering Workbooks and Stage Gate reviews, coordinating stakeholders, and providing engineering assurance for projects across the TfL estate.

Were you given much responsibility during your placement / internship?

Yes. I was given a good level of responsibility throughout my placement and was trusted to take ownership of my work and manage tasks independently. I was encouraged to use my judgement, contribute to discussions, work with a range of stakeholders, and take responsibility for delivering work to agreed deadlines. This helped me develop my technical knowledge, confidence, and professional skills.
