Overview of the Role
Overall, how would you describe your experience at Cisco?
I've had a really positive experience at Cisco so far (I've been an employee for coming up to 1.5 years next month). The people on my team are all amazing to work with. I have a very talented manager who seems to take my career goals seriously and happens to just be a brilliant person. In fact, everyone I've directly interacted with at Cisco, either in person or online have been pleasant. I love the company culture, and the values. I feel like the messaging from senior leadership is consistent with the day to day. I like the fact that although I actually didn't want to work in 'QA' necessarily, I'm actually doing lots of different kinds of work, and I hope to be able to grow my career more here.
What are the main responsibilities of the role and which elements of the role do you enjoy the most?
I love researching about new and upcoming technologies, and generally learning about how different aspects of the technologies work. I've done a lot of evaluation work on AI which has been so so interesting, and there's plenty of that to go around. I also came up with a novel way to automate parts of the AI evaluation, it was so cool to be given such an interesting problem to tackle (namely, observing the quality (defined by certain metrics) of AI output over time).
To what extent does your role give you the opportunity to contribute meaningfully and feel valued by your team?

Loads honestly, my team are so grateful for the work I do, and I'm always around to help them out with projects and bounce ideas. It's also a brand new role within the team, so there's lots of freedom to make an impact, and also there's always lots of change happening - new OS releases, changing the architecture, onboarding apps, and plenty to keep one going.
How does your compensation package - including perks & benefits - fairly remunerate you for the work you do?

I hope to move out of 'QA' per se, but for now, yes, I do think it's decent deal (the base salary, the bonus, all the additional benefits, etc.)
How well do you feel the role is preparing you for your future career?

Cisco is such a good space to develop professionally -- there's freedom/autonomy and plenty to get stuck into!
How would you rate the extent to which you were developing new or existing skills through formal training and your day-to-day role?
4/5
Gave 4 stars because I'm not doing any formal training per se, though Cisco do offer a lot of content through their own channels and also through sponsoring external subscriptions. I need to make more use of that. Personally, I'm someone who learns autonomously by reading documentation, and tinkering. Of course these days people can also interact with AI, and at Cisco it's encouraged, for the purposes of developing skills.

Flawless to be honest. Either I'm very lucky, or Cisco are very skilled at employing highly capable team leaders.
How is your work-life balance?

I think this aspect of working at Cisco is really good. There's definitely not the work culture of staying over hours to show dedication. Expectations are completely reasonable (I hope I'm not the only one!).
What is the organisational culture, values and general atmosphere like?

I hinted at this earlier -- Cisco's messaging around their culture and values really does track with my experiences day to day. They put a lot of effort into cultivating a 'Conscious Culture', and champion real diversity, inclusivity, respect, etc. They do training on unconscious bias, to make people more aware of the phenomenon in order that they can address it. My job is technically hybrid, and I do go in from time to time (quite often at the moment actually), but my team is mostly remote. It's nice to have the option and flexibility.
How would you rate Cisco initiatives when it comes to equality, diversity, inclusion and accessibility?

How would you rate Cisco CSR (Corporate Social Responsibility) initiatives?

I don't know a huge amount about them, hence the slightly lower score. One thing I do like is that all Cisco employees have 10 days a year to volunteer for causes they care about. That feels really cool and I've not known of many companies offering that at all.

How well did the role match your expectations based on the recruitment process?

All good. I definitely knew what I was getting into. I appreciated that I met a lot of the team during recruitment, which made starting the job that much easier!
When considering the recruitment & onboarding process, have you any specific tips or advice you would give to others applying to Cisco?
There's loads of good guides and advice on good practice for interview processes. I guess one part of the process that stand out is that I recall that one of my interviews had at least three of the team interviewing me. I think that can be daunting for some, especially if you've not had many interviews before. But my advice would be to lean into it because it's so useful to find out who the people are that you'd be working with, and it's likely you'll have team meetings so getting a flavour for team dynamics is good.
