Software Engineer Review

I am thoroughly enjoying working at Cisco. The work is interesting and impacts a lot of people, everyone I've met and worked with has been lovely and the culture is a very welcoming and supportive one.

I mainly do backend software engineering work, but I also do a good amount of frontend and architectural work as well. My work also involves a lot of collaboration with other teams. I think the flexibility is my favourite part of the job as I am given a lot of freedom to impliment things how I would like and have a lot of input in the team.

I've felt like a contributing member of this team from the very start as they've always treated my input just the same as everyone else's and people don't just automatically look to the most senior and experienced people but instead weigh everyone's input and opinions equally.

I'm unsure on how the salary and benefits compare to similar companies and job roles, but I am very happy with what they offer.

I am in a team with only a few software engineers so I'm given perhaps more responsibility than I would in a larger team, which has helped me to learn faster and pick up a wide variety of skills.

I received a lot of support when I first started and wasn't expected to start contributing to the code bases for a bit while I got up to speed. And this has extended well past that introductory period as everyone is so helpful that I feel I can ask anyone for help or guidance and they will go out of their way to support me. It is a very collaborative and supportive environment.

There is a lot of flexibility in the work hours as it is all remote and nobody is strict on when you start/finish, just as long as you get your work done people do not mind. There is no pressure to work late and the few times I have worked late to get something finished I have been told not to in future and asked about my workload. It's quite a laid back culture and people genuinely care that you have time outside of work.

Almost everyone I have met at Cisco has been so nice and friendly that it makes for a very welcoming environment. The culture is one that really values people.

I have never been discriminated against while working here, in fact I think the people I work with and meet around the offices are extremely accepting and inclusive, which I believe reflects on the type of people who are hired to work here. There are also lots of groups and spaces for all types of people.

The job listing was a very good description of what my job ended up being, and from meeting some of the people I now work with through the interview process I got a good read of what kind of environment it would be.
