In my internship role as a intern within the Professional and Business Services Sector team, I supported the team by delivering analysis and project support across key workstreams. Day-to-day, this involved attending team check-ins, prioritising tasks, analysing data and producing updates, documenting actions/decisions, and collaborating with stakeholders to progress deliverables and meet timelines.

I was given ownership of defined deliverables within a main project, with responsibility for managing my own workload, producing outputs to a required standard, and providing regular progress updates to my manager and stakeholders. I was trusted to work independently while seeking guidance at key decision points.

Yes — I’ve developed both new and existing skills during the internship. I strengthened my stakeholder management and communication by providing clear updates and tailoring my messages to different audiences. I also improved my analytical and problem‑solving skills through working on project deliverables end-to-end, as well as my organisation and time management by balancing day-to-day tasks with longer-term project deadlines. Finally, I built a stronger understanding of HSBC’s ways of working, governance, and how teams collaborate to deliver outcomes.

I received a strong level of support and guidance throughout my internship. My team and manager were approachable and provided regular check-ins, clear direction on priorities, and timely feedback to help me improve. My buddy/mentor helped me settle in quickly, understand day-to-day ways of working, and gave practical advice and context when I had questions. Early Careers also provided structured support through onboarding, clear communications, and touchpoints during the programme, which helped me stay on track and make the most of the placement.

The culture felt supportive, collaborative, and professional. People were approachable and willing to help, and there was a strong emphasis on teamwork, respect, and inclusive working. The general atmosphere was busy but positive, with clear expectations, open communication, and a focus on delivering high-quality outcomes while encouraging learning and development.

I enjoyed my internship a lot. It was a positive and valuable experience where I felt welcomed by the team, trusted with meaningful work, and able to see how my contributions supported wider outcomes. I particularly enjoyed learning new ways of working, collaborating with different stakeholders, and developing both my technical and professional skills over the placement.
