Overview of Role

Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis.

My placement was in the mortagages team. I shadowed different members of the wider team including call listening, mortagage applications and the auditing process. My main task was to triage and resolve colleagues’ queries and issues across end-to-end mortgage processes to keep cases moving and reduce delays. I also took part in intern-led projects, including a video directing task and an AI-focused project. These gave me the chance to work creatively, collaborate with other interns, and build my project coordination skills. The Early Careers team were very supportive throughout, providing clear guidance, feedback, and encouragement that helped me deliver to a good standard.

Were you given much responsibility during your placement / internship?

Yes, I held full accountability for resolving an assigned set of colleagues’ mortgage process issues, prioritising queries, diagnosing root causes, and driving actions through to completion within agreed timelines. I was also responsible for supporting system change activity by validating the successful migration of content into a new platform, completing post-migration checks to confirm accuracy, completeness, and usability, and flagging exceptions for remediation.

Skills Development

Have you learnt any new skills, or developed your existing skills?

I’ve developed my ability to adapt quickly to new systems and processes, particularly by supporting and observing the end-to-end migration of content to a new platform and completing checks to confirm the migration was successful.
I’ve also improved my confidence in presenting and communicating updates clearly to colleagues, tailoring the level of detail to the audience.
Finally, I’ve gained a much stronger understanding of how a corporate environment operates day to day, how teams collaborate, how work is prioritised and tracked, and how to manage tasks professionally within agreed timelines and governance.

Support and Guidance

How much support and guidance did you receive during your placement / internship?

I received a high level of support and guidance throughout my placement. The Early Careers team were excellent, training week was really well structured and helped me settle in quickly and understand expectations from the start. They also held regular check-ins/meetings to make sure I was progressing well and had what I needed, and I was matched with a buddy I could reach out to at any time for day-to-day questions.
Alongside that, my line manager and the wider team were really supportive. They were approachable, took time to explain processes and context, and gave constructive feedback that helped me build confidence and deliver my work effectively.

Company Culture

What was the company culture and general atmosphere like?

The company culture and general atmosphere were really positive and friendly. People were approachable, supportive, and happy to answer questions, which made it easy to settle in and learn quickly. The team environment felt collaborative, with colleagues communicating openly and working together to get things done.
I also appreciated the emphasis on giving back, there was a mandatory volunteering day, which reinforced that the organisation values community impact alongside day-to-day delivery.

Recommendations & Advice

Would you recommend HSBC to a friend?

Yes

What advice would you give to others applying to HSBC

Be yourself in the application. HSBC genuinely cares a lot about who you are and how you work with people, not just what you’ve got on your CV.
It’s a really friendly place, and there’s loads of support and training once you’re in, so don’t stress about knowing everything upfront. If you come across as curious, willing to learn, and easy to work with, that goes a long way.
