Overview of Role

Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis.

I worked in First Direct Unsecured Lending Acquisitions, where I supported sustainable growth by helping improve acquisition performance and customer experience within agreed risk and regulatory requirements. On a day-to-day basis, I analysed data, produced regular MI and reporting, and translated insights into practical actions to improve journeys and outcomes. I collaborated with a range of internal teams and partners, coordinating activity, tracking delivery, and helping resolve issues efficiently. I also worked closely with the Complaints team to review complaint themes and root causes, using that feedback to inform improvements that reduced repeat issues and strengthened customer outcomes.

Were you given much responsibility during your placement / internship?

Yes, I was given a good level of responsibility during my placement. I was assigned a project linked to a senior management–level issue, which meant I had real ownership over progressing the work and providing evidence-based updates. Alongside that, I led the production of data packs and reporting that were used in senior leadership discussions. This wasn’t “intern-only” work—it was part of the team’s core BAU, and I was trusted to deliver accurate, clear outputs to support decision-making.

Skills Development

Have you learnt any new skills, or developed your existing skills?

Yes, I developed a range of skills during my placement. I significantly improved my public speaking and my confidence in speaking up, particularly when presenting insights and contributing in team discussions. I also strengthened my data analysis skills by moving from university-based work to applying those techniques in a real business setting—working with live data, producing reporting, and translating findings into clear actions and recommendations. Alongside this, I developed my stakeholder management skills by collaborating with different teams, aligning priorities, and communicating progress effectively to support delivery

Support and Guidance

How much support and guidance did you receive during your placement / internship?

I received a strong level of support and guidance throughout my placement. I was always provided with the resources I needed to do my role effectively, and, most importantly, my placement manager and programme buddy consistently made time for me whenever I needed help or advice, regardless of how busy they were. They genuinely prioritised my development and learning journey—regularly checking in, giving constructive feedback, and helping me build confidence as I took on more responsibility.

Company Culture

What was the company culture and general atmosphere like?

The company culture and general atmosphere were very positive. It promoted diversity and inclusivity, and there was a strong emphasis on teamwork, collaboration and supporting each other to deliver. Wellbeing was also a real priority, which created a safe and supportive environment to work in. I was consistently in a good mood because I had a healthy work–life balance, and at HSBC there was a genuine interest in how you were doing—wellbeing wasn’t just something written down, it was clearly reflected in day-to-day behaviours and support.

Recommendations & Advice

Would you recommend HSBC to a friend?

Yes

What advice would you give to others applying to HSBC

My advice would be to apply knowing you’re applying to a place that will genuinely support your development, your needs and your goals. When people at HSBC say there are no silly questions and you can’t ask too many, they really mean it—so be curious, speak up, and make the most of the learning opportunities around you. I’ve never worked in an environment where my goals and development were considered as consistently as they were here, so I’d reassure anyone applying that they’ll be in very good professional hands.
