Overview of Role

Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis.

I am an Application Developer within the Equities and Derivatives organisation. In my role, I use my knowledge of Java development and DevOps practices to deliver projects and support the applications and services used by the business.
A typical day begins with arriving at the office around 9:00 a.m., logging on, and checking for any updates, communications, or issues that may require attention. I then focus on progressing my assigned tasks or projects until our team stand-up meeting around midday, where we discuss progress, priorities, and any blockers.
After lunch, I continue working on my assigned work for the remainder of the day. This can involve a variety of activities, including understanding JIRA tickets, researching technologies or business areas, learning how existing services operate, and developing new functionality using TDD. I also spend time creating and reviewing pull requests, investigating and resolving issues, collaborating with team members, and participating in technical discussions to ensure projects are delivered effectively.

Were you given much responsibility during your placement / internship?

I felt that I was given a high degree of responsibility, trust, and autonomy during my internship. I was encouraged to take ownership of my work and had the freedom to communicate which tasks I wanted to work on and where I believed my time would be most effectively spent.
The tasks assigned to me had real value and contributed to larger projects within the team. This gave me the opportunity to make a meaningful impact while developing my technical and problem-solving skills. I was trusted to work independently, research solutions, collaborate with teammates when needed.

I received a good level of support and guidance throughout my internship. I felt comfortable reaching out to colleagues whenever I needed help, and there was always someone available to answer questions or provide advice.
