Overview of Role

Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis.

My role was in the Actuarial Private business unit within the Glasgow office. The internship lasted for 2 months, during which we were each allocated to a handful of client teams - each providing work assignments for us - as well as departmental training exercises. In general, these were well managed and organised. We got good exposure to various levels of actuarial work - both technical actuarial work and consultancy work - which gave quite a complete insight into the industry.

Were you given much responsibility during your placement / internship?

The interns were not given too much client-interaction, but there was about as much as you can reasonably ask for given our lack of experience.

Skills Development

Have you learnt any new skills, or developed your existing skills?

On the technical level, we used a lot of Excel. The training exercises introduced us to some more advanced functions of Excel and the client work allowed us to get used to it. Additionally, we were given challenges in Power BI and internal systems, which we benefitted form.
We also took part in a central individual project, which allowed us to practice presentation in the professional setting.

Support and Guidance

How much support and guidance did you receive during your placement / internship?

We were given a lot of support, generally. I must give praise to Hymans' as an organisation: their culture is distinctly positive in the (Glasgow) office and everyone lends a hand if it is necessary.
It is helpful to have senior colleagues sitting so close by, as they can lend advice and are more than happy to do so.

Company Culture

What was the company culture and general atmosphere like?

I feel quite strongly that Hymans is a phenomenal company to work for. They treated us very well, and they treat their permanent staff very well too. there are plenty of office events and the employees are very close to each other, which contributes to the friendly atmosphere. There were numerous social events that I was glad to be a part of, as well. I will say that the people really make Hymans and it was fantastic getting to know so many of them.

Overall Experience

To what extent did you enjoy your placement / internship?

Loved it. I have enjoyed my introduction to the pensions industry. The work has been well organised, distributed, and I felt that the guidance on my efforts was clear and constructive. More than the work though, I really appreciated Hymans' dedication to its employees. They claim to want it to be the "best job you'll ever have" and it is absolutely evident. I can't speak highly enough of the culture and approach to career building and self-growth.

Yes

What advice would you give to others applying to Hymans Robertson

They are looking for a certain kind of person, rather than a pre-established skillset (at least for the internship). They want people who will embrace, and contribute to, their culture - as well as get stuck in with the work and business! I would advise people to spend time on the application questions and avoid using AI. They made a point of saying they wanted evidence of human character - not just the standard professional jargon that everyone sticks into an application. Be honest above all else and make sure you understand the company values because they really do prioritise them.
