Overview of the Role
Overall, how would you describe your experience at Transport for London?
What are the main responsibilities of the role and which elements of the role do you enjoy the most?
The element I enjoy most is the direct interface between strategic planning and frontline execution. Rolling out practical solutions that station control rooms and operational staff can adopt immediately gives clear, tangible value to the work. Being trusted to lead initiatives independently while collaborating directly with cross-functional teams keeps the day-to-day work challenging and engaging.
To what extent does your role give you the opportunity to contribute meaningfully and feel valued by your team?
How does your compensation package - including perks & benefits - fairly remunerate you for the work you do?
How well do you feel the role is preparing you for your future career?
Direct access to structured leadership development programmes, one-to-one mentoring, and exposure to senior decision-makers allows you to build professional confidence rapidly. You are treated as an emerging manager from the start, leaving you with demonstrable project results across multiple departments by the end of the programme.
How would you rate the extent to which you were developing new or existing skills through formal training and your day-to-day role?
Access to tailored leadership development programmes, accredited safety and management qualifications and dedicated mentorship that helps you build a solid foundation in governance and strategy.
On-the-job experience rapidly sharpens essential management capabilities, including cross-functional stakeholder engagement, project lifecycle delivery, risk management and operational data analysis.
Experience & Company Culture
How is the support you receive?
Line Management: Placement managers set clear expectations, carry out regular one-to-one reviews, and give you autonomy while remaining available when operational roadblocks crop up.
Mentoring: Access to senior mentors provides an objective sounding board for leadership growth, career mapping, and strategic thinking outside your day-to-day team.
Buddy System: Being paired with a second-year graduate gives you practical advice on settling into teams, rotation bidding, and day-to-day scheme logistics.
HR & Graduate Development: The early careers team maintains structured oversight of performance objectives, qualification progress, and rotation transitions.
How is your work-life balance?
Hybrid working is well-established across corporate and operational support teams. The 30-day annual leave allowance offers genuine flexibility to recharge and managers consistently respect boundaries around personal time and logging off on schedule.
What is the organisational culture, values and general atmosphere like?
Colleagues across all seniority levels are open to questions, generous with their operational knowledge, and keen to support early career professionals. The atmosphere is professional without being stuffy, encouraging open dialogue, accountability, and continuous improvement. Hybrid working policies are applied fairly and pragmatically, keeping teams connected while supporting everyday flexibility.
How would you rate Transport for London initiatives when it comes to equality, diversity, inclusion and accessibility?
Workforce Inclusion: Active and influential Staff Network Groups (including Women, LGBT+, RACE, Faith, and Disability networks) host high-engagement events, panel sessions, and policy consultations throughout the year.
Network Accessibility: Continuous capital investment goes into step-free station access programmes, tactile paving upgrades, and clear visual and audio passenger information systems across legacy and new fleets.
Inclusive Working Practices: Clear policies on workplace adjustments, inclusive recruitment panels, and structured apprenticeships provide genuine pathways for talent from all backgrounds.
How would you rate Transport for London CSR (Corporate Social Responsibility) initiatives?
Decarbonisation and Green Transport: Aggressive rollout of zero-emission electric and hydrogen buses, energy efficiency upgrades across the Underground network, and promotion of active travel routes across London.
Community and Youth Engagement: Structured outreach schemes run through schools and colleges, championing STEM careers, rail safety education, and accessible apprenticeships across transport operations.
Recommendations & Advice
Would you recommend Transport for London to a friend?
Why?
How well did the role match your expectations based on the recruitment process?
When considering the recruitment & onboarding process, have you any specific tips or advice you would give to others applying to Transport for London?
Structure competency examples tightly: Use the STAR method to give concise, evidence-backed answers during interviews. Make it obvious what you personally decided, executed, and delivered.
Demonstrate collaborative leadership: In assessment centre group tasks, listen actively, build constructively on points raised by others, and keep the team focused on time and delivery. TfL looks for inclusive team players rather than dominant voices.
Be authentic about public service: Speak clearly about why you want to support London's infrastructure and how you stay composed when managing shifting priorities under pressure.
