Intern Actuarial Consultant Review

I support other actuarial consultants by taking on more basic tasks, helping me build my core skills while freeing up their time to focus on higher-priority projects. I calculate individual member pensions using actuarial models provided by Aon. I also carry out research on pension funds, which helps more senior actuaries develop the best possible advice for our clients. As I am still very junior within the team, I also spend time arranging meetings with colleagues to learn more about their roles within Aon and gain a better understanding of the different teams and career paths available.

During the internship, I was given the opportunity to take on responsibility within client teams. This involved writing draft reports of annual valuations, which would then be checked by the team and presented to the client as advice. I was also given multiple individual pension scheme member calculations to perform. This involved applying the data provided about a member’s service within the scheme so that we could calculate and provide their pension benefits. These are just a few examples of the pieces of work I had the opportunity to take on during my internship.
At times, I was given several pieces of work at once, which required me to organise and prioritise my workload effectively. Through this, I learned how to communicate my availability clearly to colleagues and manage expectations when balancing multiple tasks and deadlines.

I was able to develop my Excel skills significantly during the internship. To be productive and efficient at work, it is important to learn the basics thoroughly so that you can minimise mistakes as you develop in your career. I also learned a great deal about pensions and how actuaries calculate them. I gained an understanding of the many different laws and regulations that actuaries need to be aware of and how these must be applied within their calculations.
In addition, I was encouraged to speak with many people about their roles within the industry and their career paths to learn how I can develop my own career. This pushed me out of my comfort zone and gave me the confidence to speak with a wide range of people. Through these conversations, I gained a much better understanding of the different roles and opportunities available within the actuarial profession and the wider actuarial team.

I received constant support from my colleagues throughout the internship, and I used this to my advantage by asking as many questions as I could whenever I was given a task. This helped me make sure that I fully understood what I was doing before completing the work. After completing a task, I would always receive feedback, which was very helpful in identifying and improving on my mistakes. The combination of being able to ask questions and receiving regular feedback helped me learn at a much faster rate and continuously improve throughout the internship.

I really enjoyed my internship. Coming from a very technical and mathematical background, this was quite different from what I do at university. My initial impression was that much of the work felt like solving a puzzle. However, as I learned more about the different roles within the team, I realised there were many similarities to the analytical skills that I had developed at university.
Another highlight of the internship was the inclusivity that I felt from everyone in the office. There was a real sense of community every single day, and one of my favourite things to do was sit next to someone new and listen to their story. I enjoyed learning about the different career paths people had taken, their experiences within Aon, and what they enjoyed most about their roles. These conversations helped me gain a much deeper understanding of both the actuarial profession and Aon's culture.
Overall, the combination of challenging work, continuous learning, and the welcoming atmosphere made this a very enjoyable and rewarding internship experience.
