Commercial Risk Brokering Review

Throughout my internship with Aon's Surety & Guarantee team, I supported a wide range of broking, market research and client-related activities. My day-to-day responsibilities included researching surety products and market trends, assisting with financial and credit analysis, updating insurer appetite and capability databases, and preparing materials to support client and market discussions. I regularly liaised with surety underwriters across the market to gather information on underwriting appetite, bond issuance capabilities and industry developments, while also building and maintaining professional relationships with key market contacts.
In addition to project-based work, I attended client, insurer and internal meetings to develop my understanding of the surety market and Aon's role within it. I supported the team with research into new business opportunities, emerging markets and specialist bond requirements, helping to provide insights that could support client solutions. Alongside this, I contributed to presentations, market overviews and internal resources, while continuously developing my technical understanding of surety, commercial risk and the wider insurance industry.
A key part of the role was taking ownership of my own development by proactively seeking exposure to different areas of the business, networking with underwriters and colleagues, and learning how surety solutions are structured, marketed and delivered to clients.

Yes. I was trusted to manage tasks independently, communicate directly with underwriters and market contacts, conduct research, update internal resources, support client work and attend meetings across the surety market. The level of responsibility increased throughout the internship as my knowledge and confidence developed.

Yes. One of the biggest areas of development was my technical understanding of the surety market, including different bond types, underwriting considerations, insurer appetites and how surety solutions support clients. Coming into the internship, I had very limited knowledge of the industry, but through research, client work and exposure to market discussions, I developed a much stronger commercial and technical understanding of the sector.
I also significantly improved my communication and relationship-building skills. The role involved interacting with underwriters, colleagues and other market professionals, which helped me become more confident in professional conversations and networking situations. Through attending meetings and presenting findings back to the team, I strengthened my ability to communicate clearly and tailor information to different audiences.
In addition, I developed my research and analytical skills by reviewing company information, gathering market intelligence and supporting business development opportunities. I also became more proficient at using AI and other tools to improve efficiency, accelerate learning and present information in a concise and practical way.

I developed a strong understanding of the surety market and improved my commercial awareness, research and analytical skills. I also became more confident communicating with underwriters, clients and colleagues, strengthened my networking abilities, and learned how to present information clearly and professionally in a business environment.

The company culture was extremely welcoming, supportive and collaborative. From the beginning of the internship, I felt included as part of the team rather than "just an intern". Colleagues at all levels were approachable and willing to share their knowledge, answer questions and involve me in a wide variety of work and meetings. This created an environment where I felt comfortable asking questions, taking on new challenges and learning from others.
The atmosphere was professional but also friendly and sociable. People were genuinely interested in supporting my development and encouraging me to gain exposure to different areas of the business. I particularly enjoyed the collaborative nature of the team and the willingness of both colleagues and market contacts to share their experience and insights. This made the internship an enjoyable place to learn while also helping me build confidence in a professional environment.

I thoroughly enjoyed my internship and would rate my experience very highly. The combination of meaningful work, continuous learning opportunities, exposure to the market and a supportive team environment made it both enjoyable and valuable.
