Intern - Actuarial Consulting - Pensions Review

I completed a summer internship within Aon's UK Pensions Consulting team, supporting consultants and actuaries on a range of defined benefit pension schemes. My work included carrying out actuarial calculations, reviewing member data, assisting with cash equivalent transfer value (CETV) exercises, supporting GMP equalisation projects, and contributing to valuation and funding work. I worked with schemes including Servier, Umbro, Hartwells, Groupama and Intesa.
On a day-to-day basis, I analysed data in Excel, performed calculations, checked work for accuracy, prepared reports and client materials, attended team meetings and client calls, and collaborated with colleagues across the pensions business. Alongside my client work, I also contributed to an intern project investigating the impact of AI and emerging technologies on the pensions industry, including survey analysis and interviews with colleagues.

Yes. I was given a significant amount of responsibility for an intern. I worked on live client projects across several pension schemes and was trusted to complete calculations, analyse data and support client deliverables. Over the internship I was given increasing ownership of my work and was able to make meaningful contributions to both client work and broader team projects.

During my internship I developed a range of technical, professional and commercial skills. These included actuarial modelling and calculations, advanced Excel analysis, data validation, and a deeper understanding of defined benefit pension schemes and funding. I also improved my ability to manage multiple priorities, communicate technical information clearly, work collaboratively with colleagues and incorporate feedback into my work. Through my intern project on AI and emerging technologies, I further developed my research, survey analysis and presentation skills while gaining insight into the wider business challenges facing the industry.

I received a high level of support and guidance throughout my internship. From the outset, colleagues were approachable and willing to answer questions, explain technical concepts and provide feedback on my work. My manager and team members regularly checked in on my progress and ensured I had opportunities to develop my skills while taking on meaningful responsibilities.
As I became more confident, I was trusted with greater ownership of my work, but support was always available when needed. The feedback I received was constructive and helped me improve both my technical knowledge and professional skills. Overall, the balance between guidance and independence created an excellent learning environment and allowed me to make a meaningful contribution to the team.

The atmosphere was friendly and supportive from day one. I was encouraged to ask questions, take ownership of my work and learn from experienced colleagues. Everyone was approachable, and I felt comfortable reaching out to people across different teams. Although the work could be challenging, there was always support available, which created a positive environment for learning and development. The culture felt collaborative rather than competitive, and I enjoyed being part of a team that valued both professional growth and wellbeing.

I thoroughly enjoyed my placement. I was given meaningful responsibilities, gained exposure to real client work, and had the opportunity to apply and develop my technical skills in a professional environment. The supportive team culture and the variety of work made the experience both enjoyable and rewarding, and it strengthened my interest in pursuing a career in the industry.
