Overview of Role

Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis.

My role involved supporting consultants on a range of pensions and investment projects, including preparing client communications, analysing pension scheme data, and assisting with governance and value for money reviews. On a day-to-day basis I attended team meetings, carried out research and updated presentations and reports as well as contributing to client-facing deliverables. The role gave me a well rounded experience of the pensions industry and how consulting fits into this, allowing me to work with clients and providers.

Were you given much responsibility during your placement / internship?

Yes, I was given a very good level of responsibility during my internship. I worked on a mixture of client communications and governance projects. The team are excellent at providing the context, precedents and guidance needed to get started on new pieces of work. Feedback is regular and constructive, which means responsibility increases naturally as your confidence and understanding grow. I've felt trusted to take ownership of meaningful work while always having support available when needed.

Skills Development

Have you learnt any new skills, or developed your existing skills?

Yes, I've developed a wide range of skills over the course of the internship. From a technical perspective, I've built a much stronger understanding of DC pensions, governance, provider research and emerging regulatory developments, particularly around Value for Money requirements. I've also improved my ability to analyse information, carry out research and produce client-facing materials such as member communications, trustee training slides and governance reports.
Beyond the technical aspects, I've developed my communication skills. Working with different colleagues and clients has taught me how to tailor messages for different audiences and present complex information in an engaging way. I've also become more confident taking ownership of projects, managing my workload and incorporating feedback into my work. The support and guidance provided by the team has allowed me to take on increasingly complex tasks and contribute more independently as the internship has progressed.

Support and Guidance

How much support and guidance did you receive during your placement / internship?

I received a high level of support throughout my internship. From the outset, colleagues were approachable and willing to answer questions, explain technical concepts, and provide guidance whenever needed. I had regular check ins with my manager and buddies, received feedback on my work, and was given opportunities to learn from more experienced consultants.

Company Culture

What was the company culture and general atmosphere like?

The culture was one of the highlights of the internship. Everyone was incredibly approachable, regardless of seniority, and people genuinely wanted interns to succeed. I never felt like I was being given work just for the sake of it. Colleagues took the time to explain the background to projects, share relevant precedents and provide detailed feedback, which made it much easier to understand the bigger picture and contribute meaningfully. Because of that trust and support, I was able to take on increasing responsibility throughout the summer. There was also a strong social side to the office, with charity events, networking opportunities and regular team catch-ups, which made it easy to get to know people across my team.

Recommendations & Advice

Would you recommend Hymans Robertson to a friend?

Yes

What advice would you give to others applying to Hymans Robertson

My advice would be to be yourself throughout the application process and show an actual interest in the work the firm does. Hymans Robertson values collaboration and a willingness to learn, so it's important to demonstrate these qualities rather than trying to have all the technical knowledge from the start. If you're successful, make the most of the opportunity by asking questions, getting involved in different projects, and building relationships across the business, as colleagues are very approachable and keen to help you develop.
