Overview of Role

Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis.

As a Summer Analyst in Citi’s Investment Banking division, my role involved supporting deal teams across a range of client projects, including M&A, capital markets transactions, sector research and strategic advisory work. On a day-to-day basis, I assisted with financial analysis, company and industry research, valuation work, preparation of client presentations and internal materials, and the review of market data and transaction precedents.
The role required strong attention to detail, the ability to manage multiple workstreams under time pressure, and clear communication with analysts, associates and senior bankers. I also gained exposure to how investment banking teams advise corporate and financial sponsor clients, how transactions are executed, and how market developments impact client decision-making.

Were you given much responsibility during your placement / internship?

Yes, I was given a meaningful level of responsibility throughout the internship. I was trusted to contribute to live workstreams and internal projects, including preparing presentation materials, conducting company and sector research, updating financial analysis, reviewing comparable companies and precedent transactions, and supporting the team with ad hoc requests.
While my work was reviewed by full-time analysts and associates, I felt that my contributions were valued and that I was given opportunities to take ownership of tasks. The internship allowed me to develop my technical skills, improve my understanding of investment banking, and become more confident working in a fast-paced professional environment.

Recommendations & Advice

Would you recommend Citi to a friend?

Yes

What advice would you give to others applying to Citi

My advice to others applying to Citi would be to prepare thoroughly and show a genuine interest in both investment banking and the firm. It is important to understand Citi’s global platform, the work the Investment Banking division does, and how current market trends are affecting clients and transactions.
I would also encourage applicants to develop a strong technical foundation, particularly around valuation, financial statements and market awareness, while also being ready to demonstrate teamwork, resilience and attention to detail. Citi values people who are curious, proactive and willing to learn, so candidates should be confident in asking thoughtful questions and showing enthusiasm throughout the process.
Finally, I would advise applicants to speak to people at the firm where possible, reflect carefully on why they want to work in investment banking, and be prepared to explain why Citi is the right place for them.
