Actuarial Private Intern Review

As a Summer Intern in the Actuarial Private team, I support client teams with a range of pensions and actuarial work. On a day-to-day basis, this involves carrying out pension calculations such as transfer values, retirement quotes and refund quotes, preparing client materials for meetings, assisting with funding and accounting work, and using Excel alongside Hymans Robertson's internal systems. I also contribute to both client and member communications, including drafting newsletters and preparing correspondence. In addition, I am working on a final internship project, which involves researching my client team and developing a presentation based on my findings. Alongside client work, I attend technical training sessions and complete practical exercises designed to strengthen my pensions knowledge and technical skills. The role also provides opportunities to collaborate with other interns on projects, including using tools such as Power BI, while developing my analytical, communication, teamwork and problem-solving skills.

I improved my understanding of pensions and actuarial calculations through transfer values, retirement quotes and funding work, while also strengthening my Excel skills and learning to use Hymans systems.In addition, I developed my communication, teamwork, organisation and time management skills through client work, project research and collaborating with other interns.

I received a high level of support and guidance throughout my internship. My people manager, buddy and client teams were always approachable and willing to answer questions, provide feedback and explain unfamiliar concepts. Regular catch-ups, training sessions and opportunities to discuss tasks helped me build confidence and develop both my technical and professional skills.

The company culture was extremely friendly, welcoming and supportive. There was a very open atmosphere where everyone was approachable and willing to help, regardless of their seniority. This created a collaborative environment where asking questions and learning from others felt natural, helping me settle in quickly and make the most of my internship experience.

I thoroughly enjoyed my internship and found it to be a valuable and rewarding experience. The role provided a great balance of technical learning, client work and collaboration, allowing me to develop both my actuarial knowledge and professional skills. The supportive culture, variety of work and opportunities to take on responsibility made the experience particularly enjoyable and reinforced my interest in pursuing a career in actuarial consulting.
