Overview of Role

Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis.

I was an actuarial public intern within the Glasgow office. My job focused around a project, where I had to solve a problem within a business unit. I got to sit in client meetings and pick up work where needed. I helped with new employers and accounting exercises.

Were you given much responsibility during your placement / internship?

I was treated like an employee from day one, and not given any "dummy" exercises. The work I was doing had real impact and I loved the responsibility I was given.

Have you learnt any new skills, or developed your existing skills?

Built on my Excel skills and problem solving. My professional communication improved and since I was quite busy on a day-to-day basis, my time management got really good.

How much support and guidance did you receive during your placement / internship?

It was a good balance of always having someone to help you as well as having almost free reign to tackle problems. I felt free in the sense that my ideas were valued but I always could look for someone to help me.

Company Culture

What was the company culture and general atmosphere like?

Loved the culture. Everyone is so friendly and willing to help, I never felt stupid asking questions and I was able to grow because of it. Despite the relaxed and friendly atmosphere, I also felt the hard working nature when I was in the office and it was inspiring being surrounded by industry professionals.

Overall Experience

To what extent did you enjoy your placement / internship?

11/10. It was nothing like I managed and was a great insight into an actuarial career, The office atmosphere and the work I was doing was so much fun and rewarding that I hope to get a return offer for their graduate scheme. I would definitely recommend Hymans Robertson for anyone looking for an actuarial internship as the training is excellent and the ceiling to grow is limitless.
