Overview of Role

Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis.

I joined as a summer intern in the Actuarial Private team. The work was a combination of client work for our assigned clients, actuarial technical exercises/work, and an individual research project exploring the client relationship with one of the assigned clients. There were many opportunities to pick up any ad hoc work for different workstreams or client teams. We also had the opportunity to run fundraisers as part of the Charity challenge.

Were you given much responsibility during your placement / internship?

Yes, the level of responsibility given was brilliant, especially on my client teams. Very quickly after joining, I was involved in completing transfer values, funding updates, creating valuation reports, valuing insured annuities, and calculating monthly factors. All of these tasks are for the client, hence the quality of work must be high standard, and having this responsibility early allowed me to become more confident and knowledgeable by the end of the internship.

Support and Guidance

How much support and guidance did you receive during your placement / internship?

I was initially assigned a buddy who was super friendly and supportive, they answered any questions I had, whether it was a general question or work-specific. I was also assigned a people manager who provided me with feedback, helped me action any interest I had or support if I had any struggles. As a minimum, I had weekly catch-ups both my people manager and buddy to chat about how things were going. Everyone in the whole business unit was super approachable, friendly and supportive for any questions I had.
