Summer Student DCC Review

I interned within the defined contribution consulting business unit at Hymans. My time here has taught me that this role is very diverse, with my daily tasks including exposure to investment, governance, communications, modelling and much more. No two days look the same, and it is a quick paced dynamic role that's hard to get tired of due to the breadth of work to be done.

I immediately was surprised at the amount of responsibility given to me. I was placed on real client work and internal projects that had a true contribution to the company. This responsibility energised me in my learning as I felt proud and excited to have tangible input. With the responsibility came a lot of support, and I never once felt like I was left in the dark and always had tasks explained to me thoroughly and felt it was very easy and approachable to ask follow up questions when suitable.

I have developed time management skills during my internship. It has forced me to make sure I know how to prioritise deadlines, and communicate with my peers to keep them informed of my progress, to ensure pieces of work are completed on time. I believe this internship has showcased and developed more technical skills, having to manage and analyse large sets of real life data.

My support and guidance has been great during my time here. I have had plenty of training sessions, and each piece of work is explained clearly. Everyone is so welcoming and supportive and asking my team in the office for help is never at an inconvenience to them. We were provided with wider training sessions such as presentation skills and an insight to networking, this not only progressed my skills within work but also broadened my overall social skills.

I would say Hymans culture is special, and truly lives up to what they promote. Everyone within the workplace is friendly and helpful. I value the lack of hierarchy in the office, as everyone sits together. This makes it easy to get insight from partners, senior consultants and people from different business units. Everyone no matter their position is always open to a chat, and it allows you to get a better feel of Hymans culture.

I thoroughly enjoyed my internship, I'm leaving feeling like I've genuinely made positive connections with my colleagues, and have developed a range of technical and social skills that I can take forward in my career. I'm going to miss it, and I feel lucky being able to say that about an internship.
